SUMMARY:East of Ireland Pipe Band Championships
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 30th June 2024 the East of Ireland Festival of Piping & Drumming incorporating the East of Ireland Pipe Band Championships and Drum Majors Championships\, will be staged in the grounds of the Promenade\, Howth\, Co Dublin. The Championships are promoted by St Lawrence PB\, Howth and the Leinster Branch IPBA. The contest is held under the rules of Cumann Buíon Píobaire na hÉireann\, the Irish Pipe Band Association. The Promenade has been the historic venue for the event and the contest takes place the week before the All-Ireland Pipe Band Championships. We would like to welcome all our bands and in particular we are pleased to mention North Texas Caledonian Pipes & Drums who will be participating in the championships. \nRules: • Bands must register on arrival at the contest venue • All bands can play in the grade allotted by their association and one grade above • Grades 3a and 3b will be merged • To signify the end of the contest the ‘The Battle’s O’er’ will be played by all bands. • As a ‘Salute to the Chieftain’ the ‘Minstrel Boy’ will be played en-masse • For the massed band tunes a designated Drum Corps will play lead\, with all other drummers joining on the Double Forte • Grades 3A and 3B will be merged • Prizes: 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd and Best Drum Corps\, in each grade\, will be awarded Trophies • All trophies are perpetual • A full Adjudication Panel will be used • Closing Date for Entry: Friday 21st June 2024 Bands holding trophies please return them the Contest Secretary before entry closing date. Any bands returning trophies on the day please ensure they are cleaned.

To prove their skills\, the Drum Majors compete with one another to throw their maces over a banner – all in perfect time to the marching music! SUMMARY:The Raasay Piping Competition
DESCRIPTION:How to get to Raasay \n\nYou’ll need to get to Skye first. From there\, you can catch the ferry to Raasay from Sconser. \nSconser – Raasay is a Turn up and Go route – when you pre-purchase tickets on this route\, you’ll be purchasing an ‘open’ ticket for a chosen departure date\, valid for the season in which you’ve purchased it\, but it won’t have a specific sailing time. Simply turn up at the port of departure and go on the next available sailing. \n\n\nThe competition is being sponsored by award winning Isle of Raasay Distillery\, and it will be held on the island of Raasay on Saturday\, September 7\, 2024. \nThe competition format will be: a slow air seann nós style or a piobaireachd song followed by a selection of dance music (Strathspeys and Reels) to be played with a tempo and rhythm suitable to be danced to by a hard shoe percussive Scottish step dancer. \nThe four judges who will invigilate are: Dr. Angus MacDonald and Anna Murray for the slow air/piobaireachd song\, and Angus MacKenzie and Frank McConnel for the dance music. \nFirst Prize to be a small cask of Raasay Whisky worth £3\,000. Second Prize to be a selection of bottles of Raasay Whisky. \n\nTwelve competitors are being invited to take part.\nThere will neither be a performance fee nor an entry fee.\nPipes to be played are standard Highland pipes.\nThe competition will be set up so that the judges will not be able to see who is playing.\nTickets will be available from The Raasay Distillery – raasaydistillery.com\n\nThe competitors are: James MacKenzie\, Angus Nicolson\, Michael Grey\, Hector Henderson\, Decker Forrest\, Lorne Cousin\, Duncan Nicholson\, Simon MacKerrell\, Ben Duncan\, Ailis Sutherland\, Micheal Steele and Ciar Milne. \nProgramme for September 7 on Raasay. \n10.00 am. This school has been designed to give a fantastic social learning experience. \nAutumn Adult Gathering: 28th – 31st October 2024 \nBe part of the Adult Autumn Gathering in-person at The National Piping Centre this October. This fantastic four days of learning has been developed to make this an immersive\, fun experience. Across the four days you will have teaching from our World Class instructors – Director of Piping\, Finlay MacDonald\, John Mulhearn\, Dr Andrew Bova\, Margaret Dunn and Ailis Sutherland. As well as this there will be masterclass workshops with two of this year’s Glenfiddich Piping Championship competitors with Roddy MacLeod MBE looking at Piobaireachd and Finlay Johnston discussing Light Music. There will also be hands on workshops\, practice time\, group teaching and more. \nThe timetable will also include social activities such as a piping pub quiz\, whisky tasting and instructor recital. Booking and payment will open on Monday 2nd September 2024. Local musicians will take to the stage too. \nProgramme of the weekend: \nFriday\, November 1st 2024 – Institut Francais d’Ecosse\, Edinburgh \n\nDance workshop (included in the fest-noz ticket) in the afternoon – 6pm-7.30pm\nFest-noz with our Breton comperes as well as local musicians\, starts at 7.30pm and finishes at 10.30pm\nGalettes and crepes available from 6 to 8.30pm\n\nSaturday\, November 2nd 2024 – Garnethill Multicultural Center\, Glasgow \nMusic workshop with Jean-Luc & Gabriel – 1pm-5pm \nJean-Luc Thomas & Gabriel Faure started playing as a duet in 2020. They together blend traditional music with the accents and rhythms gleaned along their musical voyages in Brittany\, the Middle East\, Europe and South America. Expect a real treat (video link)! \nAbout the Breton music workshop \nThe workshop will start with some conversation around the Breton Fest-noz\, its history and characteristics. Jean-Luc & Gabriel will then introduce you to the Breton music repertoire of ‘Basse-Bretagne’\, where Gavotte & Plinn are queen and king. A good part of the workshop will be about learning tunes together and how playing those tunes for Breton dancers reflect it. Participants should have a good command of their instrument\, and either be able to learn tunes by ear or from a music sheet. Any instrumentalist is welcome. DESCRIPTION:Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band will have a mini band performing in concert on November 16th in Syston and District conservative club. The event is being run by the RATAE Pipe Band of Leicester. \nThe Ratae Pipe Band was formed in 2022 and are based in Leicester. They are planning a fundraising concert with members of Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band on Saturday\, November 16\, in Syston\, Leicester – see flyer below for details. \n\n\n\nThe band are led by Pipe Major Bryon Brotherton MBE who is ex-Pipe Major of Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Pipe Sergeant Syd Charles told Bagpipe.news: “Bryon originates from Leicester and when he left the army he moved back into the area and was approached to put a competing band together.  Our leading drummer\, Ed Latimer is also ex-army. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The band was formed last year with the focus on competing and starting off in Grade 4B. We have different standards of players in the band\, some that have never competed\, some that are veterans at competing\, but also with a big focus on youth. We currently have five youngsters from the age of nine to 14 years old\, so we have a real good mix. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“As with any band we are always on the look out for new members of any age. Within our members there is a wealth of pipe band knowledge and musical experience that can be passed on correctly to help with the musical ability of the band.”

DESCRIPTION:Report and results from the 2023 Caritas Banner — https://bagpipe.news/2023/11/26/solo-piping-results-from-the-caritas-banner/ \n\nGeorge Watson’s College in Edinburgh have announced an new piobaireachd competition divided into 18 & Under and 14 & Under sections. \nThe first competition will be held at George Watson’s College Music School on Sunday\, November 26\, 2023\, and it is planned to be an annual event. \nPipe Major Ross Harvey of George Watson’s College Pipe Band said: “Our event is supported by the Piobaireachd Society and hopefully this will encourage others to start a similar competition\, with the focus being to help promote ceòl mòr.  There are now very few competitions in the Central Belt for young pipers to perform piobaireachd.” \nThe official entry form can be found here: https://www.gwc.org.uk/caritasbanner23 \n\nAll competitors must register on arrival at the school and may only enter one event. DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Piping Club is a fantastic learning place for new players and those that already play. Aimed at young people aged 17 & under\, classes are taught in small groups here at The National Piping Centre in McPhater Street. Our groups\, named after famous pipe makers\, are listed below: \nStarck Group\nTime: 10am – 10.45am (45 min session)\nSuitable for those who have never had a lesson before.\n*Please note: practice chanters can be purchased from The Bagpipe Shop in-person and online. \nRobertson Group\nTime: 10am – 10.45am (45 min session)\nSuitable for those who can play all the notes and one or two grace notes\, including those who have completed a term in our Starck Group. \nCenter Group\nTime: 11am – 11.45am (45 min session)\nSuitable for those who can play a few simple embellishments/ornaments and some  two-bar phrases. \nHenderson Group\nTime: 11am – 11.45am (45 min session)\nSuitable for those who can play a simple tune\, a few more complex embellishments/ornaments and are able to interpret written music. \nLawrie Group\nTime: 12.00 noon – 1.30pm (90 min session)\nSuitable for those who can play a few more complex tunes\, advanced embellishments/ornaments and who can play in unison with other learners. Participants may have started the transition to pipes. \nThow Group\nTime: 12 noon – 1.30pm (90 min session)\nSuitable for those who are already on pipes and can play in unison with others. DESCRIPTION:Highlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2025 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music. \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert: Brìghde Chaimbeul (Breech-huh Campbell)  is a leading purveyor of celtic experimentalism and a master of the Scottish smallpipes; a bellows-blown\, mellower cousin to the famous Highland bagpipes. A native Gaelic speaker\, Brìghde  roots her music in her language and culture. She rose to prominence as a prodigy of traditional music\, but has since begun a journey to take the smallpipes into unchartered territory. She has devised a unique way or arranging for pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the instrument;  the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like atmosphere\, played with enticing virtuosic liquidity. \nAward winning instrumental folk trio Assynt are former BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician of the Year finalists\, Graham Mackenzie (fiddle) and David Shedden (pipes/whistles) alongside BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winner Innes White (guitar). 2018 saw the official launch of the band\, the release of their debut album The Road to the North and were awarded ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards.

A World Champion piper\, Ross plays with infectious passion\, bringing his distinct flair to every performance. Featuring a wealth of Scottish music talent\, the band includes Charlie Stewart\, Rory Matheson\, Graeme Armstrong\, Ross Saunders and Rory Grindlay. \nRoss’ debut album The Roke received a nomination for Trad Album of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. Ross was a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year and has won a Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections. \nFell Line are a folk trio based in Glasgow\, featuring Megan MacDonald\, Chloë Bryce & Calum McIlroy. Hailing from Lairg\, Tain\, and Aberdeenshire respectively\, they blend fiddle\, accordion\, guitar\, and their voices to present an array of dynamic tunes and delicate songs. All three have performed extensively across Scotland and beyond\, appearing at internationally renowned events including Festival Interceltique de Lorient\, Celtic Colours International Festival\, and Celtic Connections\, where they won Battle of the Folk Bands in 2024.
