DESCRIPTION:Your questions about the 3rd Annual Jimmy McIntosh MBE Piobaireachd Workshop Weekend answered!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat should I bring?\nPlease be prepared to play your pipes and your practice chanter. Any sheet music or reference books you work with can be helpful as well. The workshop provides a small notebook and pen for your notes. \nWhat piobaireachd will be covered?\nThe instructors will plan their material from the list of piobaireachd submitted by attendees. Some may also choose to offer a ‘first look’ at a piece that no one has included on their lists (the sheet music will be provided for these cases.) \nCan I play my entire piobaireachd?\nEach attendee is welcome to play at least 1 or 2 movements of their piobaireachd. If class size and time allows\, the instructors may have some participants perform their entire piece. \nWhat type of feedback should I expect?\nAll of our instructors are certified judges with their respective associations and will provide specific verbal feedback on attendee’s performance. Again\, class size and time permitting\, this feedback may be a few minutes or longer in duration. \nWhere should I stay?\nThe workshop has retained a block of rooms at a special conference rate at the Hampton Inn Pittsburgh University/Medical Center\, less than 2 miles from the workshop on the Carnegie Mellon University campus. \nUse our Booking Link \nWhere should I eat?\nSaturday lunch is provided by the workshop (menu choice provided at registration)\, and the Cohon University Center contains multiple dining options. DESCRIPTION:The thirty-third annual amateur Piobaireachd competition for the Archie Kenneth Quaich will take place on Saturday\, 22nd February 2025. The venue is the rooms of the Royal Scottish Pipers Society\, 127 Rose St North Lane\, Edinburgh EH2 4BB\, starting at 09.30 a.m. \nEntries and enquiries to peter.mccalister1939@gmail.com \nCompetitors should submit two tunes with their entries\, one of which they will be asked to play on the day. Players will receive the name of the tune selected by the judges in the final tuning room. Competitors may not submit any tune with which they have previously won first prize in the competition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConditions for eligibility are as follows: \n\n Competitors must be members of the Piobaireachd Society\n Competitors must be aged 18 or over.\nCompetitors must be amateur pipers. In general\, an amateur piper is someone who has never accepted a money prize in a senior solo competition.\nCompetitors must not be members of the Competing Pipers Association.\nAnyone in doubt about their eligibility to play should contact the competition organiser for advice.\n\nThis competition has been increasingly popular in recent years. In the event that there are significantly more than 25 entries there will be a ballot\, and the first 25 entries drawn will be selected to play\, plus reserves. Those who are unsuccessful in this ballot will be definite confirmed entries for the 2026 competition\, if they intend to enter that. \nThe closing date for entries is January 10th\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Ardmore Cup Invitational Piping Competition 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Ardmore Cup is a premier solo piping invitational event in Ardmore\, Waterford\, Ireland. In 2024 the event featured these ten top pipers: Alister Donaghy\, Chris Earls\, James Frazer\, Bruce Gandy\, Angus MacColl\, Willie McCallum\, Connor Sinclair\, James Stone\, Alen Tully\, and Scott Wallace.  Judges are David Caldwell\, Tim Farrelly\, and John Wilson.  This contest is organised by Eric M. Stein who ran the SunBelt competition which took place in November in Orlando\, Florida\, and previously the Metro Cup. \nThere are two premier events\, an MSR (competitors will submit three sets) and a Medley that must include one Irish tune. \nThe competition sponsor\, RG Hardie\, is donated a fantastic set of pipes that was auctioned to support the Ardmore Cup. \nA freestyle piping event the night before The Ardmore Cup\, was held at the Round Tower Hotel. SUMMARY:John Mulhearn and The Pipe Factory
DESCRIPTION:John Mulhearn’s fifth commercial recording The Pipe Factory\, released at the height of pandemic restrictions\, was made in a semi-operational Victorian-era factory that manufactured clay pipes. With percussionist Iain Sandilands\, and electronic artist Alan Bryden\, he reimagines the album in a live setting on Saturday\, February 22\, 7:30pm in Skye Bridge Studios. \nTickets are available here. \nLike his 2018 album\, Pipes\, Mulhearn experiments with sound\, synthesizing effects from his Highland pipes in adventurous and creative ways. They also accessed percussive sounds like dripping taps and the flicking of reeds and clacking of valves\, again pitched and manipulated\, but with no artificial reverb\, “reflecting the unique acoustics of the recording location” in Glasgow near the famous Barras Market. \n“The Pipe Factory is an expression of the impulse to create new and boundary shifting music that sheds the cultural baggage of a tradition that\, in many eyes\, is either wrapped up in a pseudo-military straight-jacket – with every aspect of Scottish kitsch on full display – or as self-parodying light entertainment.” \nThe new download/stream-only album comprises ten tracks available. “The paradox at the centre of the album is that the sound world that we hear could only have been created using electronic production techniques\, yet the source of all of the sounds is purely organic.” \nMulhearn is one of the most creative forces in modern pipe music. He has continually pushed boundaries of light music and piobaireachd and is a joint-founder of The Big Music Society and the ten members of the piping collective\, Tryst.

DESCRIPTION:The Glasgow Highland Club’s Annual Competitions for schools’ pipe bands and individual pipers and drummers will take place on Sunday\, February 23\, 2025 at Hutchesons’ Grammar School\, Beaton Road\, Glasgow G41 4NW. \nThis is a good opportunity to get school bands and individuals out on the boards in an encouraging environment\, gaining useful feedback from adjudicators\, and building confidence in their performance before the 2025 competition season really gets going. \nThe Entry Form can be downloaded here.  It should be emailed to the competition organiser Don Glass\, no later than Friday\, January 24\, 2025. \nSpectators are very welcome. SUMMARY:Glasgow Uist and Barra Association Solo Piping Competition
DESCRIPTION:https://www.facebook.com/glasgowuistandbarra \n\nIn 1944 a sub committee of the Association was formed for the purpose of organising an annual solo piping competition. Ten of the world’s top pipers were invited to compete in the first competition in 1945\, which proved to be a great success and details of the competition were written into the constitution of the Association. ​ \n​Prize money was raised by Association by organising a variety of functions.  Highlanders and Islanders who had moved to\, and prospered in the city\, were extremely generous in donating silver trophies and down through the years more have been donated. Our current sponsor’s regularly give generous financial support which eases the financial burden on the committee. \nThe competition organisers are also grateful to the support given annually by the Glasgow Highland Club who graciously present a Silver Medal to the winner of the Piobaireachd competition.  The medal is most attractive and inscribed with the motto of the club in the form of “Dileas dha cheile” (“Faithful to one another”). \nToday the competition organisers annually issue invitations to 14 selected  pipers using the criteria set out by the Competing Pipers Association in that only those graded P\, or the best qualified in the A grade are considered. The competition\, held in March of each year\, is still rated as one of the big four competitions in the world. \n•Most of the competitors at the 2020 Uist & Barra.

These are certified judges or apprentice judges who are being supervised by a certified judge. Bands are classified by their playing ability and winning record. They will compete against other bands in their class. As the competition season progresses points are awarded based upon the bands standing at each sanctioned competition that the band has competed. At the end of the season the points for each competing band are compared and the band with the highest points are declared season champions in their class. \nThere are several Bands in the South Florida area. If you are interested in learning to be a pipe band piper or drummer\,  most of the bands will welcome you and some have a student level program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterested in learning the pipes or drummig in Florida?\nOur local pipe bands welcome beginners to their weekly practice sessions and provide instruction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt. Andrew’s Bagpipe Band of Miami meets on Thursdays from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at Crossbridge Church\, Miami Springs\, 301 Westward Drive. Bands from across New Zealand and Australia will compete at the 2025 New Zealand Pipe Band Championship.\n\n \n\nRoyal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association President Liam Kernaghan said: “The ‘New Zealand Nationals’ is a must-do for many pipe band aficionados around the world\, and we are delighted to play host yet again to one of the biggest competitions on the planet.\n\n \n\n“With strong entries across all six grades – including 6 in Grade One\, 17 in Grade 4B and twelve in the Juvenile grade – we are absolutely delighted to be putting on such a top-quality event. With top bands from Australia coming across\, the quintessential trans-Tasman rivalry will be on full display.\n\n \n\n“The pipe band community down-under is continuing to go from strength to strength\, and we can’t wait to see the music play out on the park.”\n\n \n\nTerry Lee and Paul Turner are headlining a top-tier adjudication panel. SUMMARY:CLASP Adult Practice Chanter Competition March 2025
DESCRIPTION:CLASP are delighted to announce a new series of online practice chanter competitions for adults who are in the early stages of their piping journey and not yet ready to compete in a bagpipe competition. \n\n\n\nWe are also very excited to announce that CLASP has secured sponsorship from ES Session Chanters and the overall Practice Chanter Champion will receive one of these fabulous chanters as a prize. \n\n\n\nEntries for this competition will close on Saturday 15th March. Competitors should email their video submissions to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk by Sunday 16th March 2025. \n\n\n\nOur aim\n\n\n\nTo offer adults at the early stages of their piping career a competition platform\, which is geographically accessible to all\, to comfortably begin competing and help the transition between learning on the Practice Chanter and competing in amateur solo bagpipe competitions. \n\n\n\nPractice Chanter Events on offer: Piobaireachd Ground 2/4 March (2 parts repeated) Strathspey & Reel (2 parts of a Strathspey and 2 parts of a Reel) Jig (2 parts repeated) \n\n\n\n*Competitors can enter one\, two\, three or all four events. League Points will be on offer for all four events\, which determines the overall winner. \n\n\n\nWho can take part\n\n\n\nCompetitors should be age 18+ and amateur level. (For example\, has not competed in Open/Professional Piping Competitions in the past). This event is open to competitors who have not yet competed on a bagpipe in any competition. As a general guide\, we would recommend competitors look at the CLASP Grade 4 Bagpipe events. If these events (on bagpipes) are currently out of reach\, it is likely that you would be a good candidate for the practice chanter event as an avenue to enter piping competitions and work towards competing on bagpipes. \n\n\n\nHere is a link to CLASP Bagpipe competition tune requirements: https://theclasp.co.uk/set-tunes/#requirements \n\n\n\nCompetition information\n\n\n\nAll competitors will need to become CLASP members. This can be done via http://theclasp.co.uk and click on the ‘Join Now’ icon.  You will receive a welcome email and will be asked to inform us of your grading. If you wish to take part in the practice chanter events\, please indicate that in your reply email. \n\n\n\nOnce your grading is updated you will be able to enter any online practice chanter competitions that are currently open. \n\n\n\nHow to submit your performance\n\n\n\nWe will ask competitors to submitted a pre-recorded video (Unlisted – You Tube Link) by Sunday 16th March to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk. \n\n\n\nAll video submissions will be compiled and sent to the judge(s). For example\, a competitor might choose to plays the first two parts of Maggie Cameron (which is a 4 parted Strathspey). \n\n\n\nThe Overall Chanter Champion\n\n\n\nThe overall Chanter Championship will be determined by a points system and the person with the highest points will receive an ES Session Chanter \n\n\n\nhttps://www.essessionchanter.co.uk/stainless \n\n\n\nIn the event of a tie\, the overall award will be given to the competitor with the highest Piobaireachd placing\, followed by the 2/4 March event as the next event to be used in a tie break situation. \n\n\n\n________________________________________ \n\n\n\nVIDEO Submission Practice Chanter Competition\n\n\n\n-Competition video submissions should be recorded in the date window outlined by the CLASP. \n\n\n\n– All entries will be video submitted using the free platform\, YouTube. \n\n\n\n– Videos should be submitted separately for each event. For example\, if you are entering all four categories. You should email 4 separate video links. \n\n\n\n– Each video submission must be made in one complete take (no editing allowed)\, but use as many attempts as you want. \n\n\n\n– CLASP competitors should introduce themselves at the start of their video recording and include the following information: Competitors Name/ Event /Name of Competition and year and please include the Tune Name(s). For example: My name is John Smith and I will be taking part in the Practice Chanter 2/4 March event for the CLASP Competition\, March 2025. My tune is Teribus. (This information should also be included when uploading your competition recording(s) on YouTube. Please see the video link below\, which was recorded by CLASP admin and includes the basic steps to correctly uploading an unlisted video on YouTube and then emailing the link: https://youtu.be/vNBUxSX-I28?si=XNlORCnfOtio11Fb \n\n\n\n-Competitors’ videos must show a clear shot of all the competitors’ fingers. Videos must be lighted properly so your face and hands can be clearly seen. Videos with poor lighting or sound may not be accepted. \n\n\n\n– Video submissions should be uploaded to YouTube and then competitors should email the video link(s) to both clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk \n\n\n\n– CLASP recommends that competitors list their uploaded video submission as ‘Unlisted’. ‘Unlisted’ videos allow you to control who can view your video and only those you share the link with can view the video submission. \n\n\n\n– All video submissions must be emailed to CLASP admin by midnight (UK time) on the closing date of video submissions. \n\n\n\n– CLASP admin will share each competitors’ video submission link with their relevant judge(s) for the adjudication process. \n\n\n\nAdjudication\n\n\n\nOnce the closing date for video submissions passes\, competitors’ video links will be sent to their relevant judge(s) for the adjudication process. \n\n\n\nAnnouncement of Winners\n\n\n\nAll participants will be emailed the results list approximately 2 weeks following the close of competition video submissions and results will also be posted on the news section of the CLASP website and on https://bagpipe.news/ \n\n\n\nCrit sheets will be emailed out to each competitor following the announcement of results.
