This instruction apparently took place upon the village green now known as the Bow Butts. It is upon this green that the annual village games are held\, since the charter to hold a market was given\, it is said\, to the people of the village by Robert Bruce himself\, in celebration of the victorious return to Ceres of the men who fought at Bannockburn. No other Highland Games can claim the continuous history of the Ceres Games\, which\, despite the disapproval of the 16th Century kirk\, have continued without interruption since 1314\, except during the periods of the Act of Proconscription (1746-1782) which followed Bonnie Prince Charlie’s rebellion\, the Great War years and latterly in 2020 when COVID struck. They were originally always held on the 24th of June each year\, the anniversary of the battle\, but it has recently become more convenient to hold them on the last Saturday of June.

SUMMARY:Corby Highland Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Pipe Band Competitions\nSolo Piping\nSolo Drumming\nAll England Highland Dancing Championships\nLM Academy’s Mini Highland Games\nWorld Porridge Eating Contests (Porridge supplied By Hamlyn’s of Scotland)\nDog Show\nLocal Demonstrations\nCraft Stalls\nStevens Funfair\nMassed Pipe Bands\n\n\nWelcome to Corby Highland Gathering\, an annual event that celebrates our Scottish heritage right here in the heart of Corby. Attendees can enjoy the sights and sounds of pipe bands\, watching dancers from around the country & beyond compete in the All England Highland Dancing Championships\, and other cultural activities. Join us for a day of fun for the whole family\, complete with craft stalls\, delicious food and drink\, and funfair rides all while immersing yourself in a little piece of Scotland in England. \n\n\nHistory\n\n\nLOCATION\n\n\nCorby Highland Gathering is more than just an event\, it is a celebration of the town’s rich Scottish heritage. Our dedicated volunteers\, Mark Pengelly\, Amanda Gibson\, Amanda Tilley and Suzanne Lilly\, put in a lot of time and effort to ensure that each year’s event is unique and enjoyable for the whole family. With a rich history dating back several decades\, our community’s ties to Scotland are deep-rooted and we take great pride in honoring those traditions with our annual gathering. \n \nThe steelworks and creation of the New Town of Corby in the 1950s brought thousands of Scots to Corby. It was not long before a pipe band was formed with Ron Stewart as their pipe major. Following the success of the band in their grade at the All England Pipe Band Championship held at Clapham Common in 1967\, Bill Rutherford and Ron Stewart were inspired to start a Highland Gathering in Corby. \nThe first Highland Gathering in 1968 was a huge success and was sponsored by the British Steel Corporation\, who remained sponsors until the close of the steelworks in the early 1980s when the Council stepped in to support the event. \nThese early Gatherings took place at the Welfare Club Grounds in Occupation Road. Since then the Gathering has moved around the town and for the last few years has been held in the Charter Field. \nWe are only able to continue running this amazing event by fundraising\, sponsorship and advertising as we receive very little help from the council. \nMore information can be found about Corby and it’s Highland Gathering by clicking on the following links; \nhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-488000-288000/page/14 \nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corby \nIf you would like more information about supporting Corby Highland Gathering or becoming involved\, please contact info@corbyhighlandgathering.co.uk

SUMMARY:Skagit Valley Highland Games 2025
DESCRIPTION:Competitions take place on both Saturday\, July 12th and Sunday\, July 13th from 9am-5pm. \nRegistration will open in Spring\, 2025. \nThe sound is unmistakable\, and the lore of the instrument deeply woven into the very fabric of Scottish and Irish traditions and culture. To some\, the Great Highland Bagpipe is a cultural totem evoking images of warlike tartan-kilt-wearing Highlanders\, bravely leading the soldiers into battle. While it is true that is part of the instrument’s history\, the pipes have a rich and complex musical tradition that will be on full display at the Skagit Valley Highland Games. \nIndividual pipers and drummers participate in competitions where judges evaluate a player’s skill\, sound\, musical expression and other factors. Players are grouped by skill level (not age) and perform a variety of tune types (marches\, dance tunes\, slow airs and classical piping pieces). In a similar fashion\, pipe bands perform for judges as well and are judged as a group. \nCompetitors at the Skagit Valley Highland Games come from up and down the West Coast\, the lower mainland of British Columbia\, and other states and provinces to participate.
