SUMMARY:The CLASP ‘Live Online’ competition
DESCRIPTION:•Pierrick Monnier was the CLASP ‘Live Online’ Grade 3 overall winner in February 2022 \nThe Grade 1 overall winner will qualify for The Champion of Champions CLASP competition in April 2024\nThis CLASP competition will run on Saturday 11th November 2023 via the platform\, Zoom. The closing date for this competition is Sunday 22nd October 2023  at midnight (UK Time). Events will be offered to adult amateur pipers graded 1\, 2\, 3\, 4/5 and both Light Music and Piobaireachd events will be offered for all four grades. Please note that pipers graded 5 can play up in grade 4 events. \nCompetitors will play ‘Live’\, but will use a video recording to capture their live performance and should send this unedited video recording later that day to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk. When you enter the Zoom meeting\, there will be assigned breakout rooms for the different events. There will be a steward to help competitors navigate Zoom on the day. CLASP members can click into any of the named breakout rooms to listen to the competitions or if you are competing in that event. Each competitor will be given a time slot to compete in their Piobaireachd event and a separate time slot to compete in their Light Music event. (We will work around different time zones). \nThe order of play\, performance times and the selected tunes (for Grade 1 and Grade 2) will be published one week prior to the competition date on The CLASP website. Please email tune submissions by Sunday 22nd October 2023 to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk \nOnce you enter a breakout room (for example ‘Grade 2 – Piobaireachd’ breakout room) you will be asked\, at your designated performance time slot\, to start your video recording device and a steward will then introduce you and that will verify the recording. For example\, ‘This is Mary MacLeod playing The Little Spree for The CLASP ‘Live online’ November 2023 competition’ and away you go\, with a bit of tuning if you need to (but not too much). If using a mobile phone to video your recording\, please put it on flight mode. \nLater that day\, you should upload your video to you tube as an unlisted video. A video link for Piobaireachd and a separate video link for Light Music (Including all Light Music events) should be emailed by midnight on the 11th November 2023 to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk \nEvents:\nPiobaireachd – Grades 1\,2\,3&4/5 – Please note that Grade 4 pipers can opt to play a full Piobaireachd in Grade 3 if they wish (no points will be allocated for this) as well as Ground and next variation (which carry league points for grade 4).\n2/4 March Event – Grades 1\, 2\,3\,4/5\nStrathspey & Reel Event – Grades 1\,2\,3\,4/5\nJig Event- Grade 1\,2.3\, 4/5 \nPlease click on the link to see tune requirements for each grade/event- https://theclasp.co.uk/set-tunes/#requirements \n\nSome rules to read: \nCLASP Rules apply for all CLASP competitions https://theclasp.co.uk/rules-sanctioning/\nPlease wear Highland dress. Jacket optional\nCLASP members will be emailed the Zoom link prior to the competition date and this link should not be shared outside of the membership.\nIn case your video recording device does not catch the stewards intro\, you will be asked to repeat what the steward says for example\, Mary would say “yes\, I’m Mary MacLeod playing The Little Spree” … then start playing without a break. This speech will also help the judges.\nYou must not edit your recording afterwards. \nUpload your recording to YouTube (unlisted) and send the link to clasp@thepipingcente.co.uk by 23.59 hrs (Scottish time) that day. When uploading your video link to You Tube\, you get a chance to give the video a name. Adding your name again (and the tune names in the description box) will also help the judges.\nYou’ll get a Crit sheet from the judges\, so carry on playing even if you make an error – the Crit can be very helpful for your learning/development as a piper.\nPrize winners will be announced two/three weeks after the competition date. You can arrive early\, and stay as late as you like\, but be on the screen with pipes up\, in the correct room\, at your performance time. Please keep your microphone muted\, and video turned off when entering breakout rooms. When Spectating it is best to keep your microphone muted also.

SUMMARY:George Sherriff Memorial Invitational
DESCRIPTION:The 27th Annual George Sherriff Memorial Invitational will held on on November 18 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Hamilton\, Ontario. \nThe adjudicators for this year’s competition will be Michael Grey\, Margaret Houlihan and Willie McCallum. Our Master of Ceremonies for the day will be Peter Aumonier. \nThe 6/8 March event will commence at 10am. The Piobaireachd event will commence at 12:30pm after a lunch break. John Wilson\, where he rose to the rank of Pipe Sergeant.  He retired from the band in 1967. \nGeorge was well known in Ontario as a dedicated teacher of the pipes and a composer of many tunes.  He was a loyal supporter of the Niagara-Hamilton Branch of the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario. \nGeorge will be remembered fondly by his many friends and pupils.  His keen wit will be unforgettable to those of us who  knew him.  He was never without a story or wee joke. \nGeorge Sherriff’s unfailing support of many generations of young players has helped contribute to the legacy of successful piping in Ontario.  This contest is named in his honour.

DESCRIPTION:Highlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.  \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert:”Created by Angus MacPhail and Andrew Stevenson in 1999\, Skipinnish is at the very top of Scotland’s vibrant Celtic music scene\, and the band is riding an ever-growing wave of popularity.  As a traditional Scottish group\, singing primarily in English\, the anthemic songs and rocking bagpipe-led tunes of Skipinnish have led to an impressive track record of hits and sell-out shows across the country’s biggest and best music venues. \n“Following its recent tours and sell-out gigs in England\, the award-winning contemporary Celtic band’s popularity has rocketed south of the border\, demonstrating the fact that the appeal of its music is universal.”

Their debut album arose from outdoor lockdown jams in Perth (Fraser’s hometown and Roberto’s adopted home) and its title poet / shuts / clock is the geolocation tag for the park bench where they’d meet to play. They’ve now put together a superb band featuring Ross Ainslie (whistles)\, Graeme Stephen (guitar) and Doug Hough (drums) to perform joint and solo material alongside some new instrumentals. \n\n“Completing the bill at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall is Scottish multi-instrumentalist and composer Fraser Fifield. Turning his hand to low whistle\, saxophone\, and bagpipes\, his distinctive instrumental voice has many sources: Scottish folk\, Jazz\, Indian\, Balkan\, and more. He’ll be joined by Paul Harrison (wurlitzer piano) and Tom Bancroft (drums) as the talented trio perform a collection of Fifield originals from June 2023 release\, Secret Path.”

Photo: JohnSlavin@designfolk.com/Bagpipe.news \nHighlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.  \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert: “Forging the sound of the New Tradition\, Dàimh are West Highland Music’s proudest exponents. Dàimh\, the Gaelic word for Connection\, perfectly describes the electrifying musical interplay between the individual band members and portrays the interaction with audiences attending their breath-taking live shows around the world. It also translates as the connection to the deep musical well from which they draw their inspiration. On the Scottish music scene the name Dàimh has come to represent a sound of a time and place a musical integrity that many strive to emulate. Formed over 20 years ago the band have embodied the current wave of resurgence in Gaelic culture; the current line up includes younger musicians that have progressed through the thriving Feisean movement and Gaelic medium education system and joined the 3 remaining founding members to continue the cycle of the tradition. Recent achievements include receiving the MG ALBA Folk Band of the Year Award in 2015 and 2018 and passing the halfway mark on their career ambition of performing on every populated Scottish Island.”

DESCRIPTION:•RURA at Celtic Connections 2019. Photo: JohnSlavin@designfolk.com/Bagpipe.news \nHighlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.   \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the event: “A unique opportunity to see\, in a single show\, two award-winning\, progressive bands – one Scottish and one Irish – that are at the very forefront of 21st century folk. \n“Famed for its powerful\, entrancing instrumentals on fiddle\, Highland pipes\, flute\, keyboards\, bodhran and guitar\, RURA first found success at Celtic Connections in 2010\, before winning the Scottish Traditional Music Awards Up and Coming title. Since then the band has played many of the world’s leading folk festivals and appeared on numerous radio and TV shows. In 2020 RURA celebrated its 10th anniversary by recording a live album in front of a capacity crowd at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket\, and its 2023 album\, Dusk Moon\, has received extensive acclaim. \n“Taking its name – very aptly – from the old Irish for a master musician\, the olllam brings together a formidable line-up of talent including legendary Belfast piper John McSherry and fellow piper/whistler and Grammy-nominated producer Tyler Duncan. Their instrumental virtuosity and innovative compositions and arrangements marry tradition with technology\, creating a sound lush with trance-like melodies. Now considered a cult classic\, the ollam’s debut album\, elllegy\, won the 2012 Indie Acoustic Music Award for Best Instrumental Album\, and the band was named RTÉ 2022 Folk Artist of the Year.”

Photo: JohnSlavin@designfolk.com/Bagpipe.news \nHighlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.   \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert: “Carlos Nuñez is the poster boy of Galician music\, but it’s a title he has earned by both talent and hard work. With chops like  on the local bagpipes (called gaita)\, but a penchant for researching the tradition and its origins\, he has become one of Spain’s most recognizable musicians and a major force behind the reconstruction of the Galician musical tradition. Northern Spain has always been as much a part of the Celtic world as a Romance country\, with strong ties to both Ireland and Scotland\, and it was those Nuñez has explored\, as well as other strands which have taken his music through flamenco and even into North Africa and the Middle East. \n“Award-winning singer\, Hannah Rarity\, has made a lasting impression since being warmly embraced by the folk world\, winning BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year (2018) and recording and touring with top acts Blazin’ Fiddles\, Rura\, Niteworks and Cherish the Ladies. Both of her albums ‘Neath the Gloaming Star’ (2018) & ‘To Have You Near’ (2022) have been shortlisted for Album of the Year at the BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards and in 2022\, she was invited to work as co-musical director for the Opening Concert of Celtic Connections.”
