SUMMARY:Mull Highland Games
DESCRIPTION:Piping Events \nPibroch (Open)\, March (Open)\, Strathspey and Reel (Open)\, Pibroch (Junior Open)\, March\, Strathspey and Reel (Junior Local and Open)\, Strathspey and Reel\, Pibroch (Local)\, March (Local)\, Strathspey and Reel (Local)\, Beginners Chanter (Local). \nThere is no better sign that Games day has arrived in Tobermory\, than the sounds of the pipers tuning up and practising reverberating all around the bay. \nThe competitors compete in several styles of piping. \nThe Mull Highland Games takes place annually in the picturesque town of Tobermory\, the main population centre of the Hebridean Island of Mull. The island and its surroundings are steeped in history and abundant wildlife\, including eagles\, puffins\, otters\, whales\, dolphins and much more. \nAmidst the natural life and beauty of a geologically ancient landscape the islanders maintain and celebrate their unique history at the Games\, which is just one of the many events where island communities come together. \nThe third Thursday after the first Monday in July every year is set in stone as marking the day of the Games. It is a day for old friends to get together and celebrate this Celtic Olympics while cheering on competitors. \nIt is a unique spectacle combining ancient and modern competitive and cultural events for both professionals and amateurs in a beautiful setting.

SUMMARY:Arisaig Highland Games
DESCRIPTION:•Seonaidh Forrest being presented with the Cameron-Head cup for junior piping. Photo: Arthur Campbell \nPiping is one of the most iconic elements of Highland culture and our feature piping event is the Pìobaireachd competition which is often referred to as the classical music of the pipes. This is a technical piece with each part being artistically significant. Often these are calls to gatherings\, laments\, praises\, or descriptive\nArisaig Games also has a light music section covering Jigs\, Reels\, and Marches. The March is the military music where the piper marches round the platform in time to his music. When playing a Jig or Reel\, a piper is normally playing for dancers\, hence the reason for standing still on the platform tapping with one foot in time to the music. \nPiping entries are taken at the secretary’s tent up until 12 noon before the draw which takes place at or shortly after 12. The competition will start at 12.30pm prompt. \nAny late entries received after the draw has taken place will only be allowed to compete at the discretion of the judges and must be prepared to accept any position allocated to them in the order of play. \nThe draw for the Junior competitions will be held around 12:30pm at the Secretary’s tent with the competition beginning around 1pm. \nCompetition : 12.30 – 16.00 approx. \nPiping (Adult: Over 18yrs\, Open)\n151    Piobaireachd \nPiping (Adult: Over 18yrs\, Open)\n155    March\n156    Strathspey & Reel\n157    Jig \nPiping (Junior 2: Up to 18yrs\, Open)\n158    March\n159    Strathspey & Reel \nAdmission: Adults £8\, Concessions £4\, Parking £2. \nPlease note that there are no individual competition entry fees\, but all competitors are charged the standard admission at the gate. \nA family ticket priced at £22 is available for families with more than two children. \nTickets are not available in advance\, all admission fee’s are paid at the entrance gate on entry to the Games. Cash and card payments are accepted at the entrance gates\, but please bear in mind that most of the trade stands at the event will be cash only. \nCar parking is available via the main admission gate with cars parking on the hill above the Games field. \nWe do have some limited parking available closer to the field. If you require closer parking for mobility reasons\, please advise the stewards on the road and they will re-direct you to the secondary parking area.

SUMMARY:Dundonald Highland Games
DESCRIPTION:Dundonald Highland Games is one of Ayrshire’s premier cultural events. It is unique in capturing traditional Scottish heritage and strong community spirit within the picturesque setting of Royal Dundonald Castle. Admission to the Games is completely free and offers a whole range of entertainment and activities. \nThe festivities begin at 11.30am with the Children’s Fancy Dress competition at the Montgomerie Hall followed by the Street Procession through the centre of the village to the Playing Fields. At 12.30pm\, during the Opening Ceremony watch the coronation of the Games Queen and the Chieftain’s Address. \nThroughout the day the Piping Arena is home to the RSPBA Pipe Band and Drum Major contests where highly skilled local\, regional and international bands compete from Grades 1 to 4. Elsewhere\, the Solo Piping and RSOBHD Highland Dancing stages will showcase some of the finest Scottish and global talent. The Events Arena will provide a range of alternative entertainment including our burly Scots competing at the Heavy Events. Royal Dundonald Castle and the Visitor Centre is open all day and the castle will also provide a magnificent background for the Solo Lament during the Prize Giving and Closing Ceremony. \nVisit the Stalls & Craft Fayre where you will find a fantastic blend of commercial stalls and local clubs and organisations from throughout the village. \nLater on why not enter our popular Open Events competition which is free for members of the public to join in a variety of fun games and activities. Then watch the locals battle it out during the Tug-o-war and marvel in awe as the Massed Pipe Bands Parade marches through the village from the War Memorial. \nFinally\, round the day off by following a well-respected local tradition and drink a toast to the Chieftain in the local pub and continue the festivities in good company. \nWe hope you enjoy our Highland Games and all the events and activities held during Dundonald Games Week.

Second place will receive £300\, and third place £200. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n•Charles Morrison\nThe donation has been made by Ivan Reid in memory of his uncle Charles Morrison\, a man of music\, born 1899\, served in WW1\, emigrated to Canada before returning to his native land to work in the family grocers business.  He piped with the Lonach Pipe Band\, still a strong force today\, and he also played the fiddle\, the cornet and the saw.\n\n\n\nIn a programme note Ivan Reid writes: “In the days before television brought the curtain down on DIY entertainment\, Uncle Charlie and his fiddling friends would often gather to make music\, an impromptu concert in the store of the shop. His expertise in prising music from a crosscut saw\, held upright between the knees\, the blade twisted to various degrees and played with a bow was demonstrated on stage as a member of our local concert party\, The Strathdon Sparklers.” \n\n\n\nIt was Ivan Reid’s respect for his Uncle’s love of the music and the associated camaradarie which led to the gift being made. \n\n\n\nIvan added: “In years to come my wish is for pipers to mark on their calendar the fourth Saturday in August when in increasing numbers they journey to the arena in Bellabeg to compete in friendly rivalry. \n\n\n\n“My Uncle Charlie would have smiled saying\, ‘I like the sound of that’.”

SUMMARY:Birnam Highland Games
DESCRIPTION:On August 30\, 2025\, the historic games at Birnam will celebrate its 140th anniversary\, set against the backdrop of Birnam Hill and the banks of the majestic River Tay\, in the heart of glorious Perthshire. \n\n\n\nBirnam Games has always attracted a very healthy overseas element due to it being sandwiched between the Argyllshire Gathering and the Northern Meeting. Many competitors use Birnam to maintain ‘match fitness’ for Inverness. It’s also very easy to get to as it’s right on the A9 and roughly an hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow. \n\n\n\nPiping Convenor\, Stuart Letford\, said: “Last year’s event saw the largest attendance in Birnam’s long history. We even sold out of programmes for the first time! The weather was outstanding and we heard some fine performances. We’re anticipating another cracking event this year. \n\n\n\n“In the Senior competitions\, at Birnam\, competitors play two Marches\, two Strathspeys and two Reels of their own choice. In the Jig\, competitors play two Jigs\, again of their own choice. In the Ceòl Mòr competition\, competitors must submit three tunes. The judges will then ask them to play one of these. \n\n\n\n“In the Junior competitions\, competitors play tunes of their own choice in the MSR and in the Jig\, and there is no Ceòl Mòr competition for Juniors. We would definitely like to see more Juniors at Birnam.” \n\n\n\nThe judges at Birnam will be Derek Fraser and Jack Taylor (Ceòl Mòr)\, Tom Johnstone and Robert Barnes (Ceòl Bèag) with Neill Mulvie adjudicating the Juniors. \n\n\n\nThe overall winner last year was Greig Canning. \n\n\n\nStuart added: “This year we will have a late afternoon traditional music ’session’ in the beer tent\, which we’ve never had before at Birnam Games.” \n\n\n\nBirnam Games is always held on the last Saturday of the month so this year that will be August 30th. An entry fee of £8:00 (£4:00 for children) is paid at the gate but registration thereafter is free and should be made in the Secretary’s tent. Pipers can also pre-register by emailing the Piping Convenor at stuartletford@hotmail.com \n\n\n\nAll competitors – Junior and Senior – must register by 11:00. The draw for all events will be made thereafter\, with the competitions commencing at 11:45 with the Seniors’ Ceòl Mòr. \n\n\n\n*Birnam also hosts the World Championship Haggis Eating Competition\, which is free to enter.
