SUMMARY:The World Amateur Champion of Champions Solo Piping Competition 2024
DESCRIPTION:The World Amateur Champion of Champions Solo Piping Competition\nRun by The CLASP.  \nCompetition date – 27th April 2024 \nThe Competition League for Amateur Solo Pipers (The CLASP) was set up by The National Piping Centre in 2003 to give adult amateur pipers a competition platform to compete on\, through a series of grading competitions held yearly throughout Scotland and the UK. In its 20 years\, CLASP has evolved\, gaining a global membership base. To celebrate this 20 year milestone\, CLASP is working with other amateur events across the world to create a premier solo piping competition. The inaugural World Amateur Champion of Champions Solo Piping Competition is an invitational contest\, which will feature the top 10 amateur pipers selected from qualifying events across the globe. This event has been generously sponsored by David Naill Bagpipes\, who have donated a set of engraved nickel DN2E Bagpipes as the prize for the overall winner of the event. \nWhilst CLASP qualifying events are for CLASP members\, 18 years and above\, other qualifying events do not have an age restriction. For events out with the CLASP system\, any qualifying competitor who is under 18 will be invited to take part.\n\nTo create a top level amateur competition\, CLASP have set up an international panel\, which will monitor and advise and ensure the top amateur pipers in the world can be selected from the appropriate qualifying competitions worldwide. Pipers will be required to play in both Piobaireachd and an MSR discipline. Special thank you to Bob Worrall who has assisted with the North American qualifying events. \nThe 10 Qualifying events will be awarded as follows to the Grade 1 overall Champions: \n\nGlengarry Highland Games\, Maxville – North American Championships – 4th August 2023 (In-person event)  – Qualifier – Gillian Blaney (Canada)\nThe World Solo Amateur Piping Competition @ Piping Live! 2023\, Glasgow. – August 2023 (In-person event) – Jean-Sébastien Gamache (Canada)\nThe Nicol Brown – November 2023 (In-person Event) – Colin Forrest (Canada)\nGeorge Sherriff – November 2023 (In-person Event) -TBC\nThe CLASP ‘Live Online’ November 2023 (Online) –  Brady Webb (Canada)\nThe Sun Belt in Florida November 2023 (In-person Event) –\nWinter Storm – January 2024 (In-person Event)-TBC\nThe CLASP ‘Live Online’ 3rd Feb 2024 – Overall Grade 1 winner (Online Event) – TBC\nMetro Cup – 10th Feb 2024 (In-person Event) – TBC\nThe BC Indoor Competition – April 2024- Overall Grade 1 winner (In-person Event) -TBC\n\n  \nFor any duplicate winners\, the panel will decide on the piper(s) who will fill the place and will look at other prize winners in the lists. For example we may look at an association’s overall league table where the standard has been particularly competitive.\n\nThe CLASP will host the event ‘live’ using a Zoom platform. Qualifying pipers will work with event organisers to set up a good quality audio stream to give audience members a good quality experience. The competitors will video record their ‘live performance’ and send it to theclasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk on the competition day.\n\nThis event is open to audience members across the world. Register in advance to watch the stream live through zoom\, on the day of the event.  The event will be compered on the day by Bob Worrall. To tune in live\, audience members need to book their ticket via this link: \nhttps://www.thebagpipeshop.co.uk/products/the-world-amateur-champion-of-champions-solo-piping-competition-2024 \nTickets are £5. \nThe results will be announced a few days after the event\, live via The CLASP Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Film Debut and Performance — Routes: Concept\, Creation & Capture
DESCRIPTION:Join Routes String Quartet as they debut their new film\, and then will perform live at The National Piping Centre. \n“Routes: Concept\, Creation & Capture” is a film by Paul Jennings that follows the unique creative process of Scotland’s Trad. String Quartet\, The Routes Quartet as they create\, develop and record their recent release\, ‘Arche’ [Ar:ki]. The classical string quartet is a highly refined ensemble. One that members devote enormous time and care curating; ensuring that the interpretation of composers’ music is executed with virtuosic precision. Traditional musicians meanwhile strive for individual style\, compose their own tunes\, informed by geographical idioms and pride themselves on being distinctive. However\, at the heart of these two worlds lies a compelling commonality – intimacy and emotion. Both demanding the utmost of communication and empathy between players. \nSo how does this play out\, when string quartet ensemble meets a Trad. approach? Can this marriage create a new distinctive blend? Can the compositions form a creative\, emotive outlet which keeps the Traditional tune writing concept at its core? And can all this be recorded in a way that does not lose the essence of the intimate sound? This film explores this process; under guidance from string specialist producer\, Greg Lawson and sound specialist producer\, David Donaldson. Follow The Routes Quartet as they embark on this unique quest to satisfyingly combine these genres with the required intimacy and emotion from these two giants of culture. \nThe film will be followed by a Q&A session and a live performance of ‘Arche’ by The Routes String Quartet is a string quartet with a difference; made up of traditional folk musicians\, Routes writes and performs a combination of contemporary compositions and innovative arrangements of traditional music. The ensemble bridges the gap between classical and folk music; exploring the vast textures\, tones and intimate musical qualities which are characteristic of a string quartet\, but with a folksy\, rootsy accent. \nThe quartet’s music is an exquisite blend of folk\, classical and fiddle traditions\, featuring evocative arrangements of folk tunes and stunning original compositions. The Routes Quartet is made up of the classic string quartet instrumentation of cello (Rufus Huggan)\, viola (Emma Tomlinson)\, and two fiddles (David Lombardi and Madeleine Stewart).\nWith a love of Scottish music\, Routes bring different approaches from classical\, blues and Scandinavian influences to combine with their original compositions and arrangements of existing tunes. \n\nDoors 7.00pm: Start 7.30pm \n \n

SUMMARY:Celtic Connections: Brìghde Chaimbeul\, Maxwell Quartet & Linda Buckley
DESCRIPTION:•Brìghde Chaimbeul playing at Piping Live! 2019. She has devised a completely unique way of arranging for pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the instrument; the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like atmosphere\, played with enticing virtuosic liquidity. \n“The Maxwell Quartet combines a refined approach to classical works\, a passion for its own folk heritage\, and a commitment to expand the string quarter repertoire through wide-ranging projects. Since forming officially in 2010 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as postgraduate students\, the quartet has collaborated with a global roster of artists and toured extensively. In 2023 The Maxwell Quartet released Gather\, which brings together traditional Scottish music ranging from 1200 to the present day\, such as an ancient Celtic plainchant\, fishermen’s songs\, pipe marches from the Western Isles and Shetland reels\, as well as new compositions. \n“Linda Buckley is an Irish composer/performer who creates electronic and acoustic music\, often in the realm of glitch\, drone and dark ambient. In September 2020 her NMC record\, From Ocean’s Floor was released\, praised by Iggy Pop on BBC Radio 6 as “beautiful music – here is somebody really\, really special” \n“Dopey Monkey Ensemble is a collaboration between Dopey Monkey (Scotland) and Jean-Luc Thomas and Gab Faure (France). Dopey Monkey began in 2015 with Danielle Price and Martin Lee Thomson exploring all things tuba and euphonium. They have since become known for their varied creative output\, drawing together their backgrounds in jazz\, folk\, classical and experimental music\, along with their curiosity for storytelling\, cross arts and collaboration.  Jean-Luc Thomas and Gab Faure know how to train crowds to the well-dancing. But they go far beyond: they infuse into traditional tunes the accents and rhythms harvested along their travels around the world. Their duet adventure freely readapts the dance tunes with creativity\, mutual listening\, reactivity\, variations\, and improvisations. This special concert set sees the musicians sharing the stage playing tunes from their respective repertoire and cultural traditions and collaborating on new pieces – an exchange of tunes\, stories and the cultures they come from.”

In 2020 RURA celebrated its 10th anniversary by recording a live album in front of a capacity crowd at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket\, and its 2023 album\, Dusk Moon\, has received extensive acclaim. \n“Taking its name – very aptly – from the old Irish for a master musician\, the olllam brings together a formidable line-up of talent including legendary Belfast piper John McSherry and fellow piper/whistler and Grammy-nominated producer Tyler Duncan. Their instrumental virtuosity and innovative compositions and arrangements marry tradition with technology\, creating a sound lush with trance-like melodies. Now considered a cult classic\, the ollam’s debut album\, elllegy\, won the 2012 Indie Acoustic Music Award for Best Instrumental Album\, and the band was named RTÉ 2022 Folk Artist of the Year.”

DESCRIPTION:•Dàimh in concert at Celtic Connections in 2013. Photo: JohnSlavin@designfolk.com/Bagpipe.news \nHighlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.  \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert: “Forging the sound of the New Tradition\, Dàimh are West Highland Music’s proudest exponents. Dàimh\, the Gaelic word for Connection\, perfectly describes the electrifying musical interplay between the individual band members and portrays the interaction with audiences attending their breath-taking live shows around the world. It also translates as the connection to the deep musical well from which they draw their inspiration. On the Scottish music scene the name Dàimh has come to represent a sound of a time and place a musical integrity that many strive to emulate. Formed over 20 years ago the band have embodied the current wave of resurgence in Gaelic culture; the current line up includes younger musicians that have progressed through the thriving Feisean movement and Gaelic medium education system and joined the 3 remaining founding members to continue the cycle of the tradition. Recent achievements include receiving the MG ALBA Folk Band of the Year Award in 2015 and 2018 and passing the halfway mark on their career ambition of performing on every populated Scottish Island.”

SUMMARY:Celtic Connections: Cassani / Campbell with Fraser Fifield Trio
DESCRIPTION:•Fraser Fifield at Piping Live! 2021. Photo: JohnSlavin@designfolk.com/Bagpipe.news \nHighlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.  \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert: “Cassani / Campbell are Italian double bassist and songwriter\, Roberto Cassani\, and New York-based saxophonist and composer Fraser Campbell. Their debut album arose from outdoor lockdown jams in Perth (Fraser’s hometown and Roberto’s adopted home) and its title poet / shuts / clock is the geolocation tag for the park bench where they’d meet to play. They’ve now put together a superb band featuring Ross Ainslie (whistles)\, Graeme Stephen (guitar) and Doug Hough (drums) to perform joint and solo material alongside some new instrumentals. \n\n“Completing the bill at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall is Scottish multi-instrumentalist and composer Fraser Fifield. Turning his hand to low whistle\, saxophone\, and bagpipes\, his distinctive instrumental voice has many sources: Scottish folk\, Jazz\, Indian\, Balkan\, and more. He’ll be joined by Paul Harrison (wurlitzer piano) and Tom Bancroft (drums) as the talented trio perform a collection of Fifield originals from June 2023 release\, Secret Path.”
