DESCRIPTION:The return of our the National Piping Centre seasonal schools for young pipers aged 17 and under! Now called Junior Gatherings\, these schools have been designed specifically for young pipers aged 17 and under to get together and learn more about their instrument. \nSpring and Summer Courses will last for 4 days of lessons\, workshops and practice time. Our Autumn event are now split over 2 weekends\, and participants are welcome to attend one or both of the weekends. \nDates for 2023 are: \nSpring: Mon 3rd April – Thurs 6th April\nSummer 1: Mon 3rd July – Thur 6th July\nSummer 2: Mon 17th July – Thur 20th July\nAutumn 1: Sat 7th – Sun 8th October\nAutumn 2: Sat 14th – Sun 15th October \n \nThe programme will include:\n•    1-2-1 lessons with National Piping Centre teachers\n•    Group masterclasses with specialist external workshop leaders\n•    Ear-training and focus games\n•    Individual practice\n•    Come and try bellows pipes & whistle\n•    Q&As\n•    Repertoire classes\n•    Maintenance and technique workshops\n•    Demonstrations\n•    Composition\n•    Music reading skills\n•    Performance opportunities \nThese gatherings will provide exciting opportunities for young pipers to get together and have fun\, as well as learning more about their instrument and the wider musical world. \nIf you have been playing a few tunes on the pipes with at least one drone going\, or have been playing all three drones for many years\, we have an intensive and dynamic programme for you. DESCRIPTION:Details of the first Pipe Major Donald MacLeod Memorial Competition to be held since the Covid pandemic struck have been released by the Lewis and Harris Piping Society. The prestigious day-long event\, which sees eight of the best pipers in the world invited to Stornoway for the competition honouring the musical legacy of PM Donald MacLeod\, was last held in 2019 – but returns to the Caladh Inn on Friday\, April 7 this year.\n\nThe Lewis and Harris Piping Society is delighted to announce the competition is restarting and has released the names of the eight pipers invited to take part. The Society is also delighted to announce the launch this year of a Junior Donald MacLeod Competition\, and named the six youngsters from throughout the Outer Hebrides who will be taking part. The eight pipers invited to take part in this year’s PM Donald MacLeod Memorial Competition are: William McCallum\, Angus D MacColl\, Callum Beaumont\, Finlay Johnston\, Connor Sinclair\, Fred Morrison\, Glenn Brown and James Duncan Mackenzie.\n\nThe six youngsters who will be taking part in the junior competition are: brother and sister Eosaph and Mairead Gailbraith from Barra and Padruig MacMillan from South Uist – pupils of Dòmhnall Ban MacDonald – and Innes Begg from South Lochs\, Eilidh MacDonald from Tarbert and Ruairidh MacDonald from Lochs – pupils of Ashley MacDonald. The six pipers were selected as they were the top winners in the Under 18 category at the Annual Lewis and Harris Piping Society Competition held at Sir E Scott in Harris\, in October 2022. There was another piper invited\, however they had other commitments.\n\nThe junior competition takes place on Thursday\, April 6\, at the Caladh Inn at 1pm. The senior competition starts the next day at the new time of 9.30am. Main sponsors are Point and Sandwick Trust\, The Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust and Woody’s Express. The senior competition\, which was inaugurated in 1994 by the late Pipe Major Iain M Morrison and the late Angus ‘Dodo’ Stewart\, is in three sections: piobareachd; March\, Strathspey and Reel; and Hornpipe and Jig.\n\nFor the morning’s section\, each piper has been allocated one of the 27 piobareachds composed by Donald Macleod during his lifetime. For the MSR section\, the pipers are asked to play two Marches\, two Strathspeys and two Reels\, and one of each has to be a Donald Macleod composition. To round off the day\, the pipers are asked to play a Hornpipe and Jig of their own choice.\nThe performers will be assessed by a panel of three: Iain MacFadyen\, Murray Henderson and Willie Morrison – all well-known and respected pipers.\nThe overall winner is the highest aggregate scorer in the first two sections. The proceedings will be kept in order by Fear an Taighe John Wilson\, who was a pupil of Donald Macleod and is a recognised authority on all aspects of his life and work.\n\nDr John Smith\, Chairman of The Lewis and Harris Piping Society\, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to promote this competition\, bringing world-class pipers to Stornoway to commemorate Pipe Major Donald MacLeod’s musical legacy\, and we are absolutely delighted to introduce a junior version of the competition\, so that aspiring young pipers will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a similar format to their adult compatriots.\n\n“This is absolutely in line with the ethos of The Lewis and Harris Piping Society and with Donald MacLeod’s own supportive approach to teaching youngsters.”\n\nThe format for the junior competition is broadly similar to the main Donald MacLeod event\, with the young pipers invited to play a piobareachd and an MSR selection in front of two judges: Ian Duncan from the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust and Iain MacCrimmon from the MacCrimmon Foundation. The winner will be awarded a new trophy: the Norman S Morrison Cup\, to be retained for a year\, and a silver-plated long practice chanter\, donated by McCallum Bagpipes. The cup has been donated to the Society by Mrs Marie Morrison in memory of her late husband\, Stornoway businessman Norman S Morrison\, who was a founder member of The Lewis and Harris Piping Society.\n\nAshley MacDonald\, Lewis and Harris Piping Society Piping Secretary and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Piping Instructor\, will also be making sure the young pipers have the opportunity to see how the senior event runs by having them on hand as stewards on the Friday.\n\nAshley said: “We are very fortunate that all the pipers are keen and willing to learn the ropes. An insight to events like these may be useful for them in the future and help them build their own successful events.\n“I am delighted that the society is back in action\, bringing the world’s best pipers to the islands for our prestigious competition. We are fortunate and grateful to our sponsors\, committee members and the wider community for their support. We have had numerous messages asking us about details so that some can book flights etc from as far away as Germany to come and listen. The pipers themselves are delighted to be taking part and are very much looking forward to coming to Stornoway to play PM Donald MacLeod tunes.”\n\nThe traditional competition ceilidh takes place on the Friday night\, at the Caladh Inn\, from 9pm to late\, with tickets £10 on the door. The Graham MacLennan Trio will be playing\, with performances from the pipers too.\n\n\n\n\n  \nPipe Major Donald MacLeod\, MBE (August 14\, 1916-June 29\, 1982) was a Scottish bagpiper\, British Army Pipe major\, composer and bagpipe instructor. He was born in on the island of Lewis and mentored and tutored by John Morrison\, who took him to his first Northern Meeting. He was also tutored by Willie Ross\, and every week for 27 years by John MacDonald of Inverness. \nDonald joined the British Army in 1937 and went to France in 1940 with the 2nd Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders in the British Expeditionary Force. Captured as a prisoner of war during the surrender at St. Valery-en-Caux\, he escaped during the march to Germany and returned to France in 1944 as Pipe Major of the 7th Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders. \nAfter the war\, he competed in solo competitions\, and won the Gold Medal at the Northern Meeting in Inverness in 1947 and at the Argyllshire Gathering in Oban in 1954. \nAfter leaving the British Army in 1963\, MacLeod became a partner in Grainger and Campbell\, a Glasgow bagpipe-manufacturing firm. Donald published six volumes of light music and one of ceòl mòr\, and after his death a further volume was compiled. \nHe was made Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1978. With his wife Winnie he had two daughters\, Susan and Fiona. \nThe invitational competition held in his name was started by the Lewis & Harris Piping Society in 1993.

SUMMARY:Bellows Pipes Evening Class
DESCRIPTION:The next term of the National Piping Centre’s bellows piping evening classes will start from Monday\, April 24\, 2023. This ten-week evening class will take place in the NPC at McPhater Street on Mondays at 6pm. These 10 week courses are £110 for each course. \n\n\n\nThe class will run over two one-hour slots\, one for novice players and one for intermediate+ players. The novice course will explore the basics of playing bellows-blown pipes\, as well as provide an introduction to session tunes. The intermediate+ course will have more of a focus on aural learning\, arrangement of sets and tune delivery. The novice class will commence at 6pm and the intermediate+ class at 7pm. \n\n\n\nThe teacher for this course will be NPC piping teacher\, Ciar Milne. Ciar is currently finishing his fourth and final year on the Traditional Music – Piping Degree at the at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Through classes on the RCS course and having attended the annual Ceòlas Summer school on South Uist for many years\, Ciar has built up a vast repertoire and has explored different stylistic approaches to bellows pipes. DESCRIPTION:The Super Mini Contest\nRules & Regulations\nThese Rules & Regulations are unique to this contest and although some are similar to other Mini Band rules\, in various parts of the world\, they should not be confused with such. \n\nBands and Mini Entries\n\nFor the purpose of identification the word “BAND” will apply to the registered entity\, with a recognised Pipe Band Association. The word “GROUP” will apply to a Mini Band emanating from that entity. \n\nNaming of a GROUP\n\nA BAND may enter as many GROUPS as it wishes\, under the conditions set out below. Naming of the GROUPS shall be the “Name of the BAND” No 1\,2\,3 etc \n\nSize of GROUP\n\nA GROUP shall comprise:  min 4 and max 6 Pipers\, min 2 and max 3 Snares\, min 1 Bass\, 1 or 2 Tenors (optional) \nThe Pipe Major may play in such capacity in multiple GROUPS.\nThe Bass Drummer may play in such capacity in multiple GROUPS.\nNo other members of a GROUP shall play in another GROUP\, unless on a different instrument.  eg\, a Piper may play in a second GROUP as a tenor Drummer etc. \n\nAttire and Presentation\n\nAll members of a GROUP shall present in the BAND’s uniform registered with their Association. However\, due to heat conditions in Singapore\, the players wearing kilts may substitute a Collared T-Shirt for their sleeved shirt and waistcoat. Bands who are dressed in trousers\, such as BB\, must wear full uniform. Headwear and footwear shall be of convention. \nThe unit shall form as a horse shoe\, facing the audience. Adjudicators will be placed to the front (Piping/Ensemble) and to the rear side (Drumming). The directions of the Contest Supervisor must be adhered to. \n\nThe Juvenile Contest\n\nJuvenile GROUPS are required to play two elements\, for Championship recognition\, but may elect to play in one element only. \nThe registered tutor of a Juvenile BAND may play with one\, or all\, GROUPS as Pipe Major. SUMMARY:Mackay’s Memoirs Workshop with NYPBS
DESCRIPTION:Sign up to the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland’s free music workshop\, being held on Sunday\, June 18 at The National Piping Centre. \nThis workshop brings together young music-makers in Glasgow to look at Mackay’s Memoirs by Martyn Bennett. Martyn wrote this piece originally for young people to play\, and it’s a masterclass in tasteful accessible music for a large ensemble. \nPlaces are free but limited so sign up here now to claim yours! \nThere’s no need to know the piece already. We’ll be working in creative ways: adding our own parts\, learning the rhythms and melodies and using our listening skills. We will have written music on the day but you can also take part learning by ear. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event is welcoming all abilities\, and is open to all instruments and vocalists! For young people aged 12-18\, or up to 25 if you identify as having a disability. Places are free but limited so sign up now to claim yours! \nFor community organisations and schools taster sessions can be arranged via nypb@thepipingcentre.co.uk \nThe workshops will be lead by tutors from various genres and instrumental disciplines. \nThe project includes:\n\nFree access to specially created online learning resources\, including videos and new accessible parts to the score!\nThe chance to play along to guide tracks and submit your own recordings which will be woven together to form a unique film of the piece.\nLive workshop events where young people will be able to work on the piece with NYPBS players.\n\nLevel of Experience\nThe application for will ask you to state your level of musicianship using the guide below. \n\nComplete beginner: You haven’t played your instrument before or have just started.\nLevel 1: You can play a few scales and some simple melodies/ exercises or basic rudiments.\nLevel 2: You will have been playing for 6-12 months and have a basic understanding of technique plus a few tunes under your belt.\nLevel 3: You will have been playing for 1–2 years and know a good number of tunes of varying styles.\nLevel 4: You will have been playing for a minimum of 2 years and have a good grasp of your instrument.

Take the second right off the B7079 into McGregor Drive. Minnigaff Primary School is the second left\, once you’ve turned onto McGregor Drive.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’re travelling from the South\, through Newton Stewart on the A714\, take a right\, or a left if you’re travelling from the North\, directly over the Cree bridge\, which becomes the B7079. Take what is effectively the 4th left once you’ve crossed the Cree bridge\, onto McGregor Drive.\nACCESS & PARKING\nVehicle access to the school will be via an anti-clockwise one-way system around McGregor Drive\, Kirroughtree Avenue and Bruce Place. DESCRIPTION:The Western Isles Lottery Team have confirmed more detailed plans of the upcoming events they are organising\, culminating in an International showcase for everyone to enjoy.\n\n\n\nThe programme of events marks the 100th anniversary of the sailing of the Metagama from Stornoway\, transporting impoverished islanders to Canada in search of a new life. The separation of families and the departure of so many young and old islanders left an enduring mark on the Hebridean psyche and resonates with the plight of modern day.\n\n\n\nAn extravaganza of both local and international performers will entertain the expected crowds during Tattoo Metagama week.\nThe fun for everyone starts on Tuesday 8th August when the Fairground\, Continental Market and Craft Fairs open in the town centre and the week’s activities will increase as all the performers arrive.\n\n\n\nTickets are available from https://bit.ly/41578Oq\n\n\n\nThe following programme may be subject to amendments with more performers to be added. Numerous activities\, are fun fair rides\, Inflatables\, Marquees hosting Country & Western/Line Dancing\, Children’s Folk Singing/Highland Dancing and a Ceilidh/Strip the Willow alongside a variety of food and drink outlets\, to entertain the crowds before the main Tattoo Metagama Event starts at 7pm.\n\n\n\nPerformances at the main event are varied with Lewis\, Lewis & Harris Youth\, Uist\, Sgoil Lionaclete\, Skye and Strathaven & District Pipe Bands joining the lead Pipe Band from Canada. Additional acts are travelling from throughout the UK.\n\n\n\nExpect to be mesmerised by Danny the Fire Performer\, a world class act from Somerset\, England who will have his own stage. Also billed are the Ragtime Dolls from Glasgow\, a fabulous 1920s-1940s inspired\, Female Close Harmony Trio with choreographed dance routines.\n\n\n\nThey are joined by Yee’s Hung Ga Kung Fu Academy in their spectacular costumes who have been recognised by the Martial Arts World as being champions in Lion Dance.\n\n\n\nAlyth McCormack\, with her Irish Band\, makes an exciting home return to Lewis. Alyth is a singer\, songwriter\, actor and filmmaker\, known for her pure voice and diversity. Raised on Lewis\, but now living in Ireland\, she has been the featured singer with the Chieftains for the last 15 years.\n\n\n\nSambayabamba is a Glasgwegian musical melting pot that has raised the roof around Scotland\, the UK and across Europe. They are an exuberant outfit with a heavy-weight live act including a thunderous 25 piece bateria and stomping brass section.\n\n\nAdditional artists\, a Mass Choir\, dancers and fireworks will complete the line up!\n\n\n\nTony Robson\, Lead Organiser said “We are preparing for an exciting International Event involving the whole of the Outer Hebrides\, from the west shore of Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis. It culminates with Tattoo Metagama on the Lews Castle Green on Saturday 12th August. DESCRIPTION:The prestigious Junior Solo Piping Competitions held at the Northern Meeting are now open to all applicants from the United Kingdom and the wider world. The 2022 Competition will be held at Eden Court Theatre\, Inverness on Friday\, September 1\, 2023. \nThe application form for Junior Pipers can be downloaded from here \nIn the past\, these competitions have been restricted to competitors from the Highland counties of Scotland but the Northern Meeting wishes to hold a junior competition which is of a similar standing to its senior competition by making it open to all. \nThere will be Piobaireachd and March\, Strathspey and Reel competitions for two age groups – under 15 and under 18. \nA number of trophies have been presented for the Junior Competitions including The Pipe Major William Ross Trophy\, the Macinnes Cup\, The Northern Meeting Piobaireachd Quaich\, the Evan Macrae Trophy\, the Royal British Legion Brooch\, the Esther Mackenzie Trophy and the Gordon and Ena Baxter Foundation Cup. \nApplications should be made before 31 May 2023 on the downloadable form.   Payment of entry fee (£15) should be made by Paypal\, Debit or Credit Card. \n

DESCRIPTION:Return is a piece for four speaking voices\, a string quartet\, two pipers and two drummers. It’s an exploration into where long poem\, ritual theatre and ceremony meet. \nIt weaves together and layers up text\, music and performance as a celebration of the wheel of the year\, of emerging and receding\, and the common ground of death and renewal that unites us regardless and inclusive of all faiths and heritages. \nIt speaks of cycles and returns\, of seasons\, elements and the beyond human realms and rhythms; of expansion and contraction at our base and at our back that refuses the violence of fractured whiteness\, patriarchy and linear consumer capitalism. Trained in printmaking\, her interest lies in exploring places – both internal and external – connected with experiences of faith and being in everyday life. She currently works with pop music as a medium to explore different dimensions of the human voice and manners of speech\, creating sparse sound collages orchestrated by voice\, field recordings\, trumpet and distorted percussion\, working often in collaboration with trumpet player Philip Cardwell and drummer Laurie Pitt (Golden Teacher). Renowned for her deft and lyrical accordion style\, as well as her dextrous piping\, Mairearad is in great demand as a performer and composer. Many of her compositions are well known in the Scottish music scene. Among the favourites are ‘Maggie West’s Waltz’ and ‘Dram Behind the Curtain’. As a visual artist also\, Mairearad’s work can be described as impressionistic\, and a visceral response to the landscape she is so familiar. Her latest limited-edition vinyl release ‘Hearth’ seamlessly combines Mairearad’s two passions – art and music.\nmairearadgreen.co.uk \nMalin Lewis (they/them)\nMalin is a queer multi-instrumentalist inspired by humans\, queerness and the universe. One of Scotland’s most exciting creators\, Malin melds tradition with innovation on a unique newly invented\, self-made bagpipe. Malin’s long awaited debut album Halocline\, is named for the layer between salt and fresh water. Halocline is a sequence of compositions reflecting on the liminal spaces between Malin’s outer and inner worlds as a trans person. She has played in a Glasgow Samba Band for 15 years\, and she cycles everywhere on her colourful bicycle! \nAmy Redford (she/her)\nAmy settled for a guitar at 16 because despite 4 years of pestering up until then\, they just wouldn’t get her a drum kit. She’s been hitting guitars increasingly harder ever since. She finally realised the drumming dream when she joined SheBoom in 2009\, where she now teaches and leads that drumming ensemble. On guitar\, she’s currently co-fronting Sequence 369 and busting out riffs with They Theory. Previous acts include Electric Ladygarden\, Blood Of The Bull\, Touch And Go\, and Stotally Toned. Amy is a nihilistic malcontent with a fair amount of existential dread\, which is expressed in her riffs\, solos\, and frenetic drumming.

DESCRIPTION:Join the NPC Adult Gatherings in 2023\nThe National Piping Centre is bringing you a series of Adult Gatherings in 2023 for pipers aged 18+\, which have been designed to give a fantastic social learning experience. This year we will be running in person workshops  as well as online events. \nThe dates for our 2023 schools are: Autumn Adult Gathering: 30 October-2 November \nOur schools will run in two timezones\, one for in person teaching and one for online students. The in-person school will run during the day UK time (9am – 5pm UK time)\, with the online school running in the evenings (3pm – 9pm UK time). There will be no option for online learning during the day\, or in person learning in the evening. For the online schools to run in 2023\, we require a min of 6 students to register. Teachers for each school will be announced ahead of the event. \nThe school costs £275 in person and £240 online for the four days. \nWe have a new booking system for purchasing lessons. Once you have paid for your Adult Gathering place\, you will be sent an email with a form to give us more information about your playing level. Please complete this as soon as possible.. SUMMARY:The CLASP ‘Live Online’ competition
DESCRIPTION:•Pierrick Monnier was the CLASP ‘Live Online’ Grade 3 overall winner in February 2022 \nThe Grade 1 overall winner will qualify for The Champion of Champions CLASP competition in April 2024\nThis CLASP competition will run on Saturday 11th November 2023 via the platform\, Zoom. The closing date for this competition is Sunday 22nd October 2023  at midnight (UK Time). Events will be offered to adult amateur pipers graded 1\, 2\, 3\, 4/5 and both Light Music and Piobaireachd events will be offered for all four grades. Please note that pipers graded 5 can play up in grade 4 events. \nCompetitors will play ‘Live’\, but will use a video recording to capture their live performance and should send this unedited video recording later that day to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk. When you enter the Zoom meeting\, there will be assigned breakout rooms for the different events. There will be a steward to help competitors navigate Zoom on the day. CLASP members can click into any of the named breakout rooms to listen to the competitions or if you are competing in that event. Each competitor will be given a time slot to compete in their Piobaireachd event and a separate time slot to compete in their Light Music event. (We will work around different time zones). \nThe order of play\, performance times and the selected tunes (for Grade 1 and Grade 2) will be published one week prior to the competition date on The CLASP website. Adding your name again (and the tune names in the description box) will also help the judges.\nYou’ll get a Crit sheet from the judges\, so carry on playing even if you make an error – the Crit can be very helpful for your learning/development as a piper.\nPrize winners will be announced two/three weeks after the competition date. You can arrive early\, and stay as late as you like\, but be on the screen with pipes up\, in the correct room\, at your performance time. Please keep your microphone muted\, and video turned off when entering breakout rooms. When Spectating it is best to keep your microphone muted also.

SUMMARY:Sunbelt Invitational Piping Competition
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural SunBelt Invitational\, aka An Crios Gréine\, took place on November 12\, 2022. The event was won by Callum Beaumont\, who beat a top class line up of competitors consisting of Willie McCallum\, Stuart Liddell\, Bruce Gandy\, Andrew Donlon\, Ian K. MacDonald\, Ben McClamrock\, Connor Sinclair\, Glenn Brown and Angus D. MacColl. \nIn 2023 Eric Stein will work in partnership with The National Piping Centre to add an amateur competition and give two of the ten invites to the winners of CLASP events. Eric said: “We are thrilled to be working with The National Piping Centre to help us achieve our goal of promoting the best in piping and supporting aspiring players.” \nCLASP organiser Margaret Dunn said: “I’d like to thank Eric Stein for offering this opportunity to our competitors.  It raises the profile of our amateur competition and pipers to be connected with a premier international event such as the SunBelt Invitational. SUMMARY:George Sherriff Memorial Invitational
DESCRIPTION:The 27th Annual George Sherriff Memorial Invitational will held on on November 18 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Hamilton\, Ontario. \nThe adjudicators for this year’s competition will be Michael Grey\, Margaret Houlihan and Willie McCallum. Our Master of Ceremonies for the day will be Peter Aumonier. \nThe 6/8 March event will commence at 10am. The Piobaireachd event will commence at 12:30pm after a lunch break. The final March\, Strathspey & Reel event will take place at 7:30pm. \nThe church doors will open at 9am. \nThe results and presentation of awards will take place immediately following the March\, Strathspey & Reel event in the evening. \nA list of the 2023 competitors and their bios can be found here. \n  \n\n\nPipe-Major George Sherriff\n\nOn April 21\, 1995 the Ontario piping community lost an ardent supporter and a good friend.  Before coming to  Canada in 1947\, George resided in Glasgow\, where he started piping with the Boys Brigade.  He played with a number of bands in Scotland.  These included the Cabar Feidh\, Stewart and Lloyd’s and Clan MacRae Pipe Bands. \nAfter emigrating to Canada he joined the Dofasco Pipe Band.  He later joined the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders of Canada Pipe Band\, under P.M. John Wilson\, where he rose to the rank of Pipe Sergeant.  He retired from the band in 1967. \nGeorge was well known in Ontario as a dedicated teacher of the pipes and a composer of many tunes.  He was a loyal supporter of the Niagara-Hamilton Branch of the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario. \nGeorge will be remembered fondly by his many friends and pupils.  His keen wit will be unforgettable to those of us who  knew him.  He was never without a story or wee joke. \nGeorge Sherriff’s unfailing support of many generations of young players has helped contribute to the legacy of successful piping in Ontario.  This contest is named in his honour.

SUMMARY:Ratae Pipe Band Solo Piping Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Ratae Pipe Band was formed in 2022 and are based in Leicester. They are planning a fundraising concert of solo piping with Stuart Samson and Ben Duncan on Saturday\, November 18\, in Syston\, Leicester – see flyer below for details. \n\n\n\nThe band are led by Pipe Major Bryon Brotherton MBE who is ex-Pipe Major of Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Pipe Sergeant Syd Charles told Bagpipe.news: “Bryon originates from Leicester and when he left the army he moved back into the area and was approached to put a competing band together.  Our leading drummer\, Ed Latimer is also ex-army. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n“The band was formed last year with the focus on competing and starting off in Grade 4B. We have different standards of players in the band\, some that have never competed\, some that are veterans at competing\, but also with a big focus on youth. We currently have five youngsters from the age of nine to 14 years old\, so we have a real good mix. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n“As with any band we are always on the look out for new members of any age. Within our members there is a wealth of pipe band knowledge and musical experience that can be passed on correctly to help with the musical ability of the band.”
