SUMMARY:Livingstone Invitational 2025
DESCRIPTION:The PPBSO’s Niagara-Hamilton Branch is proud to announce that the 45th Annual Livingstone Invitational will be held on Saturday\, May 10\, 2025 \nStay tuned for more updates! \n\n\nThis exciting event will feature twelve of the best Bagpipers in North America and three adjudicators. The Big Music of the Great Highland Bagpipe starts at 1pm and the March\, Strathspey\, Reel\, Hornpipe & Jig Contest starts at 7pm. \n\n\nMore information to follow – https://www.ppbso-niagara-hamilton.org/the-livingstone \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Livingstone” started as an idea by William Livingstone Sr. to help promote better piping in North America. Bill Livingstone Sr. was born in Ayrshire\, Scotland in 1908 and his fondest wish as a youngster was to play the pipes. The wages that he earned working in the pits as a young boy paid for lessons that grew into a love of piping for many years. “Old Bill” immigrated to Canada in 1929 where he settled in Coppercliffe\, Ontario working in the smelter as a general foreman. During the forty years he spent in this northern community he formed pipe bands and taught many aspiring pipers. During WWII Bill was Pipe Major of the Canadian Forces Pipe Band stationed in Cape Breton. William Livingstone Sr’s. knowledge of pipes\, piping and music was unsurpassed\, always making himself available to young pipers. He had a story to share about every tune.\n\n\nIn 1978 the first “Livingstone” was organized by Bill\, helped by his family and friends. The following year the Niagara-Hamilton Branch of the PPBSO took over the organizing of the contest. The format included a March\, Strathspey\, Reel\, Hornpipe and Jig played in the afternoon with the best eight passing through to the evening contest. In 1984 the format changed to include Piobaireachd in the afternoon and the MSRH/J in the evening. \nOver the years different formats and venues have been tried but at the same time trying to keep “Old Bill’s” dream alive. William Livingstone Sr. has left a legacy to the piping community by dreaming big and starting this prestigious contest.

SUMMARY:CLASP ‘Live Online’ May 2025
DESCRIPTION:Competition Events:\nThis CLASP competition will run on Friday 2nd May 2025 (5pm-9pm) and on Saturday 3rd May 2025 via the platform\, Zoom.\n*The closing date for this competition and the tune submission deadline (for Grade 1 and 2 competitors) is Sunday 13th April 2025  at midnight (UK Time). \nAdult Practice Chanter competitors\, please follow this link which has all the information required to take part in these events: https://theclasp.co.uk/2024/09/03/clasp-introduces-practice-chanter-events-sponsored-by-essc/ \nAdult Bagpipe Events will be offered to adult amateur pipers graded 1\, 2\, 3\, 4/5 and both Light Music and Piobaireachd events will be offered for all grades. Please note that pipers graded 5 by their local piping association can play up in CLASP grade 4 events.\nCompetitors will play ‘Live’\, but will use a video recording to capture their live performance and should send this unedited video recording later that day to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk. When you enter the Zoom meeting\, there will be assigned breakout rooms for the different events/grades. There will be a steward to help competitors navigate Zoom on the day. CLASP members and competitors can click into any of the named breakout rooms to listen to the competitions. Each competitor will be given a time slot to compete in their Piobaireachd event and a separate time slot to compete in their Light Music event. (We will work around different time zones).\nThe order of play\, performance times and the tunes selected by the judges (for Grade 1 and Grade 2) will be published one week prior to the competition date on The CLASP website. Please email tune submissions by Sunday 13th April 2025 to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk \nOnce you enter a breakout room (for example ‘Grade 2 – Piobaireachd’ breakout room) you will be asked\, at your designated performance time slot\, to start your video recording device and a steward will then introduce you and that will verify the recording. For example\, ‘This is Mary MacLeod playing The Little Spree for The CLASP ‘Live online’ May 3rd\, 2025 competition’ and away you go\, with a bit of tuning if you need to (but not too much). If using a mobile phone to video your recording\, please put it on flight mode. \nLater that day\, you should upload your video to you tube as an unlisted video. *One video link for Piobaireachd and one separate video link for Light Music (Including all Light Music events -please do not stop the recording between Light Music events) should be emailed by midnight on the 2nd November 2024 to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk \nEvents:\nPiobaireachd – Grades 1\,2\,3&4/5 – Please note that Grade 4 pipers can opt to play a full Piobaireachd in Grade 3 if they wish (no points will be allocated for this) as well as Ground and next variation (which carry league points for grade 4).\n2/4 March Event – Grades 1\, 2\,3\,4/5\nStrathspey & Reel Event – Grades 1\,2\,3\,4/5\nJig Event for Grade 1\,2\,3\,4/5 \nPlease click on the link to see tune requirements for each grade/event- https://theclasp.co.uk/set-tunes/#requirements \n*Please note that we DO Not use any Piobaireachd set tune lists for any online CLASP competitions. \n\nImportant information to remember for competitors -(PLEASE READ ALL) \n\nThis is a ‘live’ VIDEO submission competition and competitors should use the Zoom meeting details as the platform to perform ‘live’ on the listed competition date(s). All video links should be uploaded and emailed as Youtube video links to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk by midnight on the day of the competition. Please make sure you set your video as `Unlisted`. The judge will be unable to open a video that is set to Private.\nWE STRONGLY advise not to use Zoom as your means of recording your video performance. My advice is to use a separate device such as a good quality Mobile Phone or whatever you have used in the past (that gives a clear recording quality). *Remember to place your mobile phone on flight mode if you are using it as a video recording device.\nWe recommend using a separate device (to the one you plan to video record your performance with) for connecting with the Zoom performance platform. A laptop/computer/tablet or a separate mobile phone device for example. If you do get disconnected at any point after the steward has introduced you\, just keep going with your performance and leave the video running. Do not stop the video until the end of your performance.\nPlease be in your assigned breakout/performance room\, ready to play at your allotted time slot. I would ask that you are muted when warming up and that you unmute when it is your time to compete. Please keep an eye on the time when you are warming up so you are not late for your performance slot.\n The Steward will ask you to turn on your video device at your allocated performance time and will announce you. The stewards’ announcement at the start of the video is what verifies the performance so it is really important that this is captured at the start of the Light Music performance and at the start of the Piobaireachd performance. Videos should not be edited.\nPlease remember that ALL light music events are played in your assigned performance time slot\, but competitors can re-tune or stop between events. *An Example of how the order might go for light music… The steward will ask the competitor to Turn on their video recording device\, The steward will announce you\, and the competitor starts- tune if you need to\, play your 2/4 March…… stop/re-tune/drink water but don’t stop the video…. Play your Strathspey/Reel… Stop/re-tune/drink water/\, but don’t stop the video….Play your Jig/6/8 March and then stop your video recording device.\nIt is useful for the judges if you add your name and tune names in the Youtube description box when uploading the video.\n Allow enough time to upload your videos to YouTube.\nResults will be announced via live video using The CLASP Facebook page. Results will also be published on BagpipeNews and on the news section of The CLASP website.

Hundreds of pipers from across the country gather to compete in one of Australia’s foremost solo piping competitions. \nWhether your interest is in the ancient and melodic sounds of the Piobaireachd\, or Ceòl mór\, with compositions dating back many hundreds of years\, or the light music (Ceòl beag) with more modern\, up tempo marches and the dance tunes of the strathspeys\, reels\, hornpipes and jigs. \nSolo Piping enquires:\nJustine Wallace\n69 Cameron Street\nMaclean NSW 2463\n02 6645 4584 \nsolos@macleanhighlandgathering.com.au \n\nPipe Bands\n\n\nIf you want to see some of Australia’s best pipe bands on a truly spectacular scale\, then the Maclean Highland Gathering is for you. \nOn Saturday morning\, the competing bands parade through the streets of Maclean to the delight of the gathered crowd on their way to the Maclean Showground\, where they battle across the day to determine who will take the trophies in one of the most competitive pipe band events on the Australian calendar. \nThe climax of the event sees all pipe bands get together and salute the Chieftain and the crowds on the hill of the Maclean Showground – one of the largest gathering of its kind in Australia. The sight and sound of 100’s of pipers and drummers playing in unison in this unique setting is an unforgettable experience. \nThe sheer brilliance of the pipers and drummers makes this an event not to be missed. \nBand and general enquiries:\nAlister Smith\n23a Roderick Street\, Maclean NSW 2463\n0429 842 472\nsecretary@macleanhighlandgathering.com.au

SUMMARY:CLASP Adult Practice Chanter Competition March 2025
DESCRIPTION:CLASP are delighted to announce a new series of online practice chanter competitions for adults who are in the early stages of their piping journey and not yet ready to compete in a bagpipe competition. \n\n\n\nWe are also very excited to announce that CLASP has secured sponsorship from ES Session Chanters and the overall Practice Chanter Champion will receive one of these fabulous chanters as a prize. \n\n\n\nEntries for this competition will close on Saturday 15th March. Competitors should email their video submissions to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk by Sunday 16th March 2025. \n\n\n\nOur aim\n\n\n\nTo offer adults at the early stages of their piping career a competition platform\, which is geographically accessible to all\, to comfortably begin competing and help the transition between learning on the Practice Chanter and competing in amateur solo bagpipe competitions. \n\n\n\nPractice Chanter Events on offer: Piobaireachd Ground 2/4 March (2 parts repeated) Strathspey & Reel (2 parts of a Strathspey and 2 parts of a Reel) Jig (2 parts repeated) \n\n\n\n*Competitors can enter one\, two\, three or all four events. League Points will be on offer for all four events\, which determines the overall winner. \n\n\n\nWho can take part\n\n\n\nCompetitors should be age 18+ and amateur level. (For example\, has not competed in Open/Professional Piping Competitions in the past). This event is open to competitors who have not yet competed on a bagpipe in any competition. As a general guide\, we would recommend competitors look at the CLASP Grade 4 Bagpipe events.
