An easily located venue just five minutes from Wellington International Airport\, and easy transfers from Auckland\, Christchurch and Dunedin\, Scots College and Wellington offer a fantastic venue for the Summer School. \nWhat will I learn?\nOver the Summer School there will be group lessons\, Masterclass workshops and more for students. Each student will be provided with a digital music pack so everyone will have new music to learn. \nWhat will the Summer School cost?\nThe cost of the Summer School will vary depending on your registration type. Click here to find out about the 2025 fees. \nWhat will my timetable look like?\nWe are just finalising the exact timetable and will update this soon\, but you can expect Masterclasses with the world’s best\, practice time\, masterclasses\, workshops\, new music\, social activities and more. \nIs it for me?\nThere is something for everyone at the RNZPBA Summer School. SUMMARY:Weekend Piping Club 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Piping Club is a fantastic learning place for new players and those that already play. Aimed at young people aged 17 & under\, classes are taught in small groups here at The National Piping Centre in McPhater Street. There are six levels\, all of which will run with the Glasgow schools term dates. \nThe Weekend Piping Club will take place on Saturdays. \nhttps://www.thepipingcentre.co.uk/learn-cat/896-npc-weekend-piping-club \nWe currently have six levels\, tailored to a range of learning stages. Our groups\, named after famous pipe makers\, are listed below: \nStarck Group\nTime: 10am – 10.45am (45 min session)\nSuitable for those who have never had a lesson before.\n*Please note: practice chanters can be purchased from The Bagpipe Shop in-person and online. \nRobertson Group\nTime: 10am – 10.45am (45 min session)\nSuitable for those who can play all the notes and one or two grace notes\, including those who have completed a term in our Starck Group. \nCenter Group\nTime: 11am – 11.45am (45 min session)\nSuitable for those who can play a few simple embellishments/ornaments and some  two-bar phrases. \nHenderson Group\nTime: 11am – 11.45am (45 min session)\nSuitable for those who can play a simple tune\, a few more complex embellishments/ornaments and are able to interpret written music. \nLawrie Group\nTime: 12.00 noon – 1.30pm (90 min session)\nSuitable for those who can play a few more complex tunes\, advanced embellishments/ornaments and who can play in unison with other learners. Participants may have started the transition to pipes. \nThow Group\nTime: 12 noon – 1.30pm (90 min session)\nSuitable for those who are already on pipes and can play in unison with others. DESCRIPTION:Highlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2025 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music. \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert: Brìghde Chaimbeul (Breech-huh Campbell)  is a leading purveyor of celtic experimentalism and a master of the Scottish smallpipes; a bellows-blown\, mellower cousin to the famous Highland bagpipes. A native Gaelic speaker\, Brìghde  roots her music in her language and culture. She rose to prominence as a prodigy of traditional music\, but has since begun a journey to take the smallpipes into unchartered territory. She has devised a unique way or arranging for pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the instrument;  the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like atmosphere\, played with enticing virtuosic liquidity. \nAward winning instrumental folk trio Assynt are former BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician of the Year finalists\, Graham Mackenzie (fiddle) and David Shedden (pipes/whistles) alongside BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winner Innes White (guitar). 2018 saw the official launch of the band\, the release of their debut album The Road to the North and were awarded ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards.

Featuring a wealth of Scottish music talent\, the band includes Charlie Stewart\, Rory Matheson\, Graeme Armstrong\, Ross Saunders and Rory Grindlay. \nRoss’ debut album The Roke received a nomination for Trad Album of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. Ross was a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year and has won a Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections. \nFell Line are a folk trio based in Glasgow\, featuring Megan MacDonald\, Chloë Bryce & Calum McIlroy. Hailing from Lairg\, Tain\, and Aberdeenshire respectively\, they blend fiddle\, accordion\, guitar\, and their voices to present an array of dynamic tunes and delicate songs. All three have performed extensively across Scotland and beyond\, appearing at internationally renowned events including Festival Interceltique de Lorient\, Celtic Colours International Festival\, and Celtic Connections\, where they won Battle of the Folk Bands in 2024.

Featuring current and former members of Mànran\, Mec Lir\, RURA and Talisk\, this is a band whose collectively crammed trophy cabinet includes several BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and All-Britain/All-Ireland titles. \nBandmates Adam Brown (Bodhrán)\, Ryan Murphy (Pipes\, Flute and Whistle)\, Tomás Callister (Fiddle)\, Adam Rhodes (Bouzouki)\, and Mohsen Amini (Concertina) use a combined commonality and a diversity of backgrounds and influences to fuel Ímar’s unmistakable synergy. The sound is centred on the overlapping cultural heritage between Scotland\, Ireland and the Isle of Man\, with the band’s name taken from a 9th-century king who ruled the combined territory. \nSupport comes from Malin Lewis\, an innovator\, award winning\, multi-instrumentalist who melds Scottish West coast tradition with a newly invented\, self-made bagpipe. Following their sold-out New Voices at Celtic Connections in 2023\, Malin released their debut album Halocline on Hudson Records to critical acclaim\, winning the German Critics Award for folk and longlisted for the SAY Award.

Four musicians from different backgrounds came together to create a full-time professional touring band. They’d go on to showcase the rich tradition of songs and tunes of Scotland’s North East on an international stage. \nLike many of the early flag-bearing Scottish folk bands\, the Old Blind Dogs lineup has changed over the years — yet the core values at the heart of the band continue to beat strong. \nThe current lineup has been settled for several years and comprises four of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians. Original member Jonny Hardie (Fiddle\, Vocals) is joined by Aaron Jones (Cittern\, Guitar\, Vocals)\, Donald Hay (Percussion\, Vocals) and Mike Katz (Pipes\, Whistles) to deliver an uplifting and intoxicating performance like only the ‘Dugs’ can. They will also be joined by US piper\, whistle player\, vocalist and Internet sensation Elias Alexander for this special show.

SUMMARY:Celtic Connections 2025 BOOK LAUNCH: Brave New Music - The Martyn Bennett Story
DESCRIPTION:Martyn Bennett was an artist ahead of his time. Piper\, violinist\, composer\, producer\, DJ – his radical blend of tradition and technology created an audacious new sound that was uniquely his own. \nSteeped in the folk cultures of Scotland\, yet inspired too by deep-rooted traditions from far beyond\, his music ignored boundaries and celebrated cultural difference wherever he found it. Although classically trained\, he was drawn to the gritty excitement of the urban dance club scene\, and his fusion of folk\, classical\, jazz and hard-edged electronica was championed by the likes of Peter Gabriel and the folklorist Hamish Henderson who labelled it ‘brave new music’. \nThis biography traces his story through personal struggles and artistic triumphs\, and offers an assessment of his place in the pantheon of major Scottish artists. It is a story of resilience as well as innovation: twice diagnosed with unrelated cancers\, his professional career lasted little more than a decade\, and he fought serious illness for half of it. He died in January 2005\, aged 33. Yet his art continues to inspire: where he led\, others have followed\, and his music still wins awards and fills concert halls at major international festivals two decades after his death. \nThis evening’s launch will be hosted by Nicola Meighan who will be joined by Gary West\, Kirsten Bennett\, Deirdre Morrison\, Rory Pierce and BJ Stewart.
