SUMMARY:Celtic Connections: Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening and Falasgair
DESCRIPTION:•Falasgair \nHighlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.  \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert: “In this exciting performance at the Drygate Brewery\, Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening explore the connecting threads of music\, landscape and people over a period of almost 2\,000 years. Named after the old Northumbrian word for twilight\, The Darkening is made up of four North-East England-based members: Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian smallpipes\, fiddle\, vocals)\, Amy Thatcher (accordion\, synth\, clogs\, vocals)\, Kieran Szifris (octave mandolin)\, Joe Truswell (drums\, percussion); with Josie Duncan from the Isle of Lewis (vocals\, clarsach). Together these dazzling musicians create musical magic; dynamic and unique ‘Ancient Northumbrian Futurism’. \n\n“Support comes from the Isle of Skye’s Falasgair. Playing a mix of traditional\, contemporary\, and self-penned tunes\, their sound is spearheaded by Macaulay Ross (fiddle)\, Dougal McKiggan (whistle) and Finn MacPherson (bagpipes)\, and reinforced by Ben Muir (keyboard)\, Caetano Hayes Pelletti (guitar and bouzouki)\, and Eoghainn Beaton (bodhran). ‘Imagine the exquisite playing of Ross Ainslie combined with the pace and stomp of Talisk.’ (The Folky Gibbon)”

SUMMARY:Celtic Connections: John Mulhearn 'The Pipe Factory' with Mike Vass & Mairearad Green
DESCRIPTION:Highlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.   \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert: “John Mulhearn is one of Highland piping’s most singular voices\, equally at home in the most traditional or experimental of contexts. His 2020 album\, The Pipe Factory\, released at the height of pandemic restrictions\, is an expression of place and the sonic possibilities of the pipes. With percussionist Iain Sandilands\, and electronic artist Alan Bryden\, he reimagines the album in a live setting: a Glaswegian soundscape set against fizzing drones\, booming beats\, and traditionally inspired melodies\, Mulhearn: ‘makes a powerful case for the Highland bagpipes as a versatile\, irresistible instrument\, and the source of a new\, Scottish sound” (The Quietus). \n“A.D.A.M – A Day A Month explodes onto the Scottish music scene: A mesmerising fusion of ancient song melodies & cutting-edge electronica. Dive into a groundbreaking sonic journey – 10 years in the making – where two phenomenal talents collide. This extraordinary voyage is the brainchild of virtuoso musician and visual artist\, Mairearad Green\, and genius composer-producer\, Mike Vass\, in an electrifying collaboration that pushes the limits of creativity. Their camaraderie unfolds a realm where tradition and modernity pulse in a harmonious cadence. \n“Venture into this thrilling realm where ancient Gaelic song melodies are reimagined amidst the exhilarating backdrop of today’s electronic and ambient soundscape. Welcome to “A.D.A.M” – A Day A Month – the epic ‘pipes and electronics’ chapter of this artistic journey\, a powerful blend of the old and the new.”

SUMMARY:Celtic Connections: Brìghde Chaimbeul\, Maxwell Quartet & Linda Buckley
DESCRIPTION:•Brìghde Chaimbeul playing at Piping Live! 2019. Photo: JohnSlavin@designfolk.com/Bagpipe.news \nHighlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.  \nThe Celtic Connection website says about the concert:  “Brìghde Chaimbeul is a leading purveyor of experimental Celtic music and of the Scottish smallpipes; a bellows-powered set of bagpipes with a double-note drone. She has devised a completely unique way of arranging for pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the instrument; the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like atmosphere\, played with enticing virtuosic liquidity. \n“The Maxwell Quartet combines a refined approach to classical works\, a passion for its own folk heritage\, and a commitment to expand the string quarter repertoire through wide-ranging projects. Since forming officially in 2010 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as postgraduate students\, the quartet has collaborated with a global roster of artists and toured extensively. In 2023 The Maxwell Quartet released Gather\, which brings together traditional Scottish music ranging from 1200 to the present day\, such as an ancient Celtic plainchant\, fishermen’s songs\, pipe marches from the Western Isles and Shetland reels\, as well as new compositions. \n“Linda Buckley is an Irish composer/performer who creates electronic and acoustic music\, often in the realm of glitch\, drone and dark ambient. In September 2020 her NMC record\, From Ocean’s Floor was released\, praised by Iggy Pop on BBC Radio 6 as “beautiful music – here is somebody really\, really special” \n“Dopey Monkey Ensemble is a collaboration between Dopey Monkey (Scotland) and Jean-Luc Thomas and Gab Faure (France). Dopey Monkey began in 2015 with Danielle Price and Martin Lee Thomson exploring all things tuba and euphonium. They have since become known for their varied creative output\, drawing together their backgrounds in jazz\, folk\, classical and experimental music\, along with their curiosity for storytelling\, cross arts and collaboration.  Jean-Luc Thomas and Gab Faure know how to train crowds to the well-dancing. But they go far beyond: they infuse into traditional tunes the accents and rhythms harvested along their travels around the world. Their duet adventure freely readapts the dance tunes with creativity\, mutual listening\, reactivity\, variations\, and improvisations. This special concert set sees the musicians sharing the stage playing tunes from their respective repertoire and cultural traditions and collaborating on new pieces – an exchange of tunes\, stories and the cultures they come from.”
