Presented by Dr Sandy Geyer

Following the strong response to the live Pipe Band Leadership Seminar held in Johannesburg, South Africa on May 9, 2026, this online session now opens the conversation internationally for pipe band leaders, tutors and emerging leaders across the global pipe band community.

The date for the online seminar is May 31, 2026, with a zoom link and the start time for various international time zones at the foot of the page.

Across pipe bands internationally, many leaders are carrying increasing levels of responsibility, pressure, expectation and emotional load โ€“ often while trying to maintain culture, standards, succession, belonging and volunteer commitment within changing environments.

Yet leadership in bands is still often approached primarily as a role, rank or set of behaviours.

This workshop explores a different perspective: what if sustainable leadership begins not with authority or performance, but with identity and self-awareness?

Drawing on doctoral research in leadership preparation, entrepreneurial leadership experience, and decades within the pipe band environment, Dr Sandy Geyer explores leadership through the lens of:

  • identity before authority
  • being before doing
  • self-awareness under pressure
  • culture and belonging
  • and the evolving emotional realities of modern leadership

The session will include:

  • The evolution of leadership thinking
  • Leadership as identity rather than position
  • A practical introduction to Integral Theory in leadership
  • Understanding ourselves and others under pressure
  • The McPersonalities framework – a reflective and often humorous look at common leadership and cultural patterns within bands
  • Live discussion and Q&A

Feedback from the Johannesburg seminar included:

โ€œGreat insights that challenge your thought process and understanding of leadership.โ€

โ€œA slick and engaging session that covers a topic that isn’t spoken about enough in pipe bands.โ€

โ€œVery important for our collective future.โ€

โ€œIt made me question my own leadership.โ€
