Highlighting concerts at Celtic Connections 2024 featuring bagpipes or piping-related music.

The Celtic Connection website says about the concert: “In this exciting performance at the Drygate Brewery, Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening explore the connecting threads of music, landscape and people over a period of almost 2,000 years. Named after the old Northumbrian word for twilight, The Darkening is made up of four North-East England-based members: Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian smallpipes, fiddle, vocals), Amy Thatcher (accordion, synth, clogs, vocals), Kieran Szifris (octave mandolin), Joe Truswell (drums, percussion); with Josie Duncan from the Isle of Lewis (vocals, clarsach). Together these dazzling musicians create musical magic; dynamic and unique ‘Ancient Northumbrian Futurism’.

“Support comes from the Isle of Skye’s Falasgair. Playing a mix of traditional, contemporary, and self-penned tunes, their sound is spearheaded by Macaulay Ross (fiddle), Dougal McKiggan (whistle) and Finn MacPherson (bagpipes), and reinforced by Ben Muir (keyboard), Caetano Hayes Pelletti (guitar and bouzouki), and Eoghainn Beaton (bodhran). ‘Imagine the exquisite playing of Ross Ainslie combined with the pace and stomp of Talisk.’ (The Folky Gibbon)”
