The Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival (Piping events)

The piping and drumming events of the Highlands & Islands Music & Dance Festival take place on Saturday, April 29 in Oban High School. The competitions are organised by the Netherlorn Piping Society and they are offering Junior Drumming, and Junior and Senior Piping events. Closing date for all entries is April 7, 2023.

Senior Piping Events

• Class 27 Piobaireachd – Grade P/A
• Class 27A Piobaireachd – Grade B
• Class 27B Piobaireachd – Grade C
• Class 28 March Strathspey and Reel – Grade P/A
• Class 28A March Strathspey and Reel – Grade B
• Class 28B March Strathspey and Reel – Grade C

Senior Piping conditions of entry

1. Gradings shall be in accordance with current CPA Gradings
2. Competitors in classes 27, 27A, 28 and 28A must submit 4 each of piobaireachd, marches, strathspeys and reels on the entry form, one of which will be selected on the day.
3. Competitors in classes 27B and 28B must submit 3 each of piobaireachd, marches, strathspeys and reels on the entry form, one of which will be selected on the day.
4. The draw for order of play will be posted on HIMDF website on or around April 15, 2023. Competitors should allow sufficient time to be ready to play when called, regardless of draw. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

Junior Piping Events

• Class 1 Juvenile Chanter – Under 12 years – Scale and 2 part tune
• Class 2 Juvenile Chanter – under 12 years – 4 part tune In abeyance
• Class 3 Juvenile Chanter – 12 to 14 years – March (minimum 2 parts)
• Class 4 Novice March – under 14 years (minimum 2 parts)
• Class 5 Ground of a Piobaireachd – under 15 years
• Class 6 Piobaireachd – under 15 years
• Class 7 March – under 15 years
• Class 8 Strathspey and Reel – under 15 years
• Class 9 Jig – under 15 years
• Class 10 Piobaireachd – 15 years and under 18 years
• Class 11 March – 15 years and under 18 years
• Class 12 Strathspey and Reel – 15 years and under 18 years
• Class 13 Hornpipe and Jig – 15 years and under 18 years

Junior Piping conditions of entry

1. Chanter competitions are not open to competitors who have previously competed on bagpipe
2. Competitors in Classes 1 2 and 3 cannot enter Class 4
3. Competitors in Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4 are ineligible to enter any other classes.
4. Competitors cannot enter both Class 1 and 2
5. Classes 1, 2 and 3 previous prize winners cannot enter these events
6. Class 4 – competitors can enter only once
7. Class 5 – competitors can enter only once
8. Competitors cannot enter both classes 5 and 6
9. Competitors in Class 4 cannot enter Classes 7 and 8
10. All classes are own choice.
11. In the event of a tie for the highest aggregate, the winner will be determined on a piobaireachd preference.
12. The draw for order of play will be posted on HIMDF website on or around 15 April 2023. Competitors should allow sufficient time to be ready to play when called, regardless of draw. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

Junior Drumming Events

• Class 400 Stick & pad – under 15 years
• Class 401 March – under 15 years
• Class 401A 6/8 March – under 15 years
• Class 402 Hornpipe & Jig – 15 years and under 18 years
• Class 403 March, Strathspey & Reel (all min 4 parts) – 15 years and under 18 years
• Class 405 Tenor drum – March (min 4 parts) – under 15 years

Junior Drumming conditions of entry

1. Competitors in Class 400 cannot enter any other classes
2. Competitors in any other Class cannot enter Class 400
3. Class 400: Previous winners cannot enter.
4. Competitors shall be responsible for arranging their own piper(s)
5. Competitors shall be responsible for arranging their own accompaniment.
6. All classes are own choice.
7. The draw for order of play will be posted on HIMDF website on or around April 15, 2023. Competitors should allow sufficient time to be ready to play when called, regardless of draw. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
