World Pipe Band Championships

Until the World Pipe Band Championships started in Glasgow in 1947, the Grade 1 pipe band event held at Cowal Highland Gathering was regarded as the World Championships.

Since 1947, the event has been staged by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (est. 1930). It was held at various locations although in recent years it has been held annually in Glasgow.

The ‘Worlds’ now attracts just over 200 pipe bands with more than a quarter coming from overseas.
