Despite the cold weather, this year’s sixth annual Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band’s annual junior piping and drumming championships saw its highest entry.

Organisers report 217 competitors at yesterday’s event which was held as ever at Calderhead High School in the Lanarkshire town of Shotts. The competition receives support from North Lanarkshire Council.

Mia Parkin of George Heriot’s School won the overall Chanter prize.

The next junior solo contest in Scotland is on January 18 in Pitlochry. This is the one organised annually by the Vale of Atholl and is restricted to pipers and drummers within the RSPBA’s Dundee, Perth and Angus branch area.
