Campbell Wilson from Tai Tapu in New Zealand has won this year’s MacGregor Memorial competition which was held online for the first time. Campbell is the son of leading solo piper, Greg Wilson.
In 2018, Campbell (pictured) became the youngest ever winner of the New Zealand Gold Medal for Piobaireachd. He was also named New Zealand Young Piper of the Year that year.
Result – 1. Campbell Wilson (Lord Lovat’s Lament); 2. Henry Pulach, Ontario (Lament for the Children); 3. Ross Conner, Scotland (End of the Great Bridge); 4. Anna Smart, New Zealand (MacDougall’s Gathering).
Judges: Ronnie McShannon and Chris Armstrong.
The MacGregor Memorial is part of the Argllshire Gathering and is for pipers aged under 22. The competition is sponsored by the Highland Society of London. The winner receives the College of Piping Salver plus a cheque for £100. It is usual that the winner of the MacGregor is promoted to the following year’s Silver Medal at Oban. This year that will be at the discretion of the judges.
