This year’s Pipe Major Donald MacLeod MBE Memorial Piping Competition has been cancelled, Bagpipe.news has learned.

Organisers, The Lewis & Harris Piping Society, cite the uncertainty of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The competition had been due to take place at the Caladh Inn, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis on Friday, April 1. We understand Friday, April 7, 2023 has been pencilled in for next year’s competition.

The event did not take palce in 2021. The 2020 competition was to have taken place behind closed doors at the National Piping Centre’s Glasgow city centre headquarters and broadcast online but was ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic restrictions in place in Scotland’s Central Belt at the time.

Finlay Johnston was the overall winner in 2019, which was the 26th year of the competition.

‘The Donald MacLeod’ is considered by competitors, judges and enthusiasts to be one of the best solo piping competitions. Held in tribute to the Lewis-born master piper and composer, it has received sponsorship in recent years from the Point & Sandwick Trust.

Fiona MacLeod, one of Donald’s daughters, presents Finlay Johnston with the trophy in 2019.
