The Virginia Military Institute Music Department invites applications for a full-time Pipe Band Director and instructor beginning August 2022. The successful candidate will lead the VMI Pipes and Drums, an element of the VMI Regimental Band.

Established in 1997, the VMI Pipes and Drums has grown to be the largest college military piping unit in the United States. Presently the VMI Pipes and Drums consists of 42 cadets enrolled at the Virginia military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. These cadets have been taught the bagpipes and play percussion in the drum line.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
•Oversee Pipe Band rehearsals and performances;
•Assist the Regimental Band in planning and executing several trips per academic year, past trips include appearance at the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, Macy’s Parade in New York City, and scores of performances in New Orleans, Orlando, Alabama in addition to events overseas;
•Recruiting incoming and current cadets to participate in the Pipe Band;
•Manage the Pipe Band budget.

This is a full-time 12-month position reporting to the Band Director.

Virginia Military Institute is a state-supported four-year undergraduate military college offering leading academic programs in the liberal arts, engineering, and the sciences. It is located in the southern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Lexington, Virginia (pop. 7,000), is also home to Washington & Lee University and offers a stimulating cultural atmosphere in a pleasant, rural setting. Staff wear uniforms but no prior military experience is required.

The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2022.

The successful candidate will be prepared for periodic domestic and international travel in support of Pipe Band activities. 

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will possess: 
•Significant experience teaching bagpipe students of all levels of experience and ability;
•Significant experience in instructing the drum line in pipe band music and cadences;
•excellent problem-solving skills and judgment;
•a working knowledge of risk management issues travel abroad and the ability to make appropriate and effective decisions in light of relevant professional standards and ethics, institutional policies and practices, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations;
•the bearing and ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff;
•high energy to deal with multiple tasks;
•budget management experience; and
•strong interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills.

At least five years of relevant professional experience is required. 

Preferred credentials:
•Progressively increasing leadership experience in higher education;
•Service as a member of the United States military.
