The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland are launching a new trainee tutor programme aimed at young people aged 18-25. This structured training and work experience would be targeted towards recent music graduates, current music students or those with a strong foundation in music and ability to play and an interest in working with young people.

The will be four Outreach Trainee Tutors and five Ensembles Trainee Tutors to support the delivery of the NYPBS Outreach programme, as well as the three National Bands this year. Each trainee will gain real world professional development opportunities throughout NYPBS 2022-23 year of activity.

Job Description from the NYPBS

Roles:
We have created nine Trainee Tutor roles to provide a structured programme of training and work experience suitable for young people aged up to, and including, 25 years old or up to 30 years old if you identify as disabled.

These roles are targeted towards recent music graduates, current music students or those with a strong foundation in pipe band music and ability to play pipes or drums to a high standard (Grade 1). If you have already applied to the NYPBS programme this year, you are still eligible to apply for this distinct opportunity.

The Outreach Trainee Tutors will work with NYPBS staff and instrumental tutors in the delivery of our outreach programme this year. As the project develops, the trainees will be encouraged to get more involved in developing the project delivery, responding to the needs of the participants.

The Ensembles Trainee Tutors will work with NPC and external mentors, receive training and work with all 3 of our National Bands delivering tuition for participants between October 2022 to February 2023, with training starting in late September 2022. This is a valuable opportunity to gain teaching experience within a national organisation. There will be opportunities to structure training plans focused on various areas, including trainee’s own musical development, gaining teaching  experience and project coordination.

Reports to: NYPBS Director Terms:
This is a freelance, part-time position. Outreach Trainees will be required to be available on the dates detailed overleaf for their respective roles. Ensembles Trainees would be required for 18 contact days, including 2 training days, detailed overleaf. However, there may be some flexibility here and we would encourage you to apply if you are available for most of the dates across the period.

Fees & Expenses:
£80 per day (max. 8 hours), training days are compensated at the same rate.

Trainees will be compensated for travel outwith Glasgow. We also have a small bursary allocation for Trainees to cover the costs of travelling to training or project work within the Glasgow area or require additional support meeting the technological requirements of digital training sessions. Successful applicants will be invited to apply for this additional support, which will be assessed according to financial need.

Experience Required:
Essential

  • A high level of musical experience in traditional music and/or pipe band to Grade 1 standard or equivalent standard.
  • An enthusiasm and commitment to youth music.
  • Willingness to deliver music tuition in a range of settings, following training.
  • A positive and can-do attitude, being open to taking initiative and demonstrating flexibility.
  • Availability on relevant dates outlined below.
