The Gordon Duncan Memorial competition was held last Sunday, August 14, on the final day of Piping Live! 2022, and the winner was Bradley Parker from Northern Ireland. The other competitors were Angus Nicolson, Scotland; Ladislas Klatka, Brittany; and Andrea Boyd, Canada.
The competition format celebrates Gordon Duncan’s links to Scotland, Ireland and Brittany and each competitor played sets of Scottish, Irish and Breton music.
The prize was presented by Gordon’s brother, Ian Duncan, who is Chairman of the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust who said: “We lost Gordon in 2005 and it was Martin Hughes who said there really must be a Memorial Trust in Gordon’s name. So the Trust was formed in 2007. To date we have given away £110,000 to pipers and other young musicians, and tuition and teaching projects. In 2020 we introduced a Performance Award to help musicians who were struggling financially during lockdown. We asked them to provide a video of them playing for 10 minutes and include a Gordon Duncan tune. If you look for Performance Award on our website (2020 here and 2021 here) you will find it a good value evening looking at these wonderful, and fun, performances.”
