Piper, composer and visual artist Mairearad Green spoke to John Mulhearn for the latest episode of The Piping Show. Mairearad, originally from Achiltibuie, has pipes as her first instrument and was taught by Norman Gillies, but also plays accordion, piano and sings in various combinations in the Scottish traditional music scene. She now lives and works from her studio in Ullapool, where her impressionistic style of painting captures the landscape surrounding her home.

It was very interesting to listen to the conversation develop in a metaphysical direction when discussing the creative process and tune writing. This is a concept that other piping composers have alluded to in the past, though none have ever spoken so clearly on – but that seems to be where we are at in 2023.
