Applications are now open for young pipers and drummers aged 10-25 from across Scotland to join the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland (NYPBS), the premier youth development programme from The National Piping Centre. The programme provides a unique opportunity for the top young players to connect, form lifelong friendships, and challenge themselves to grow as musicians through their one-of-a-kind training and performance experiences outside the competition space.
Applications for all three of their National Bands will be open until August 20. Rehearsals and performances run from October 2023-April 2024, with opportunities from their Outreach and New Horizons programme and beyond throughout the year.
It’s the first time the NYPBS has run applications during the summer, and as their Director, Steven Blake, explains: “This year we’ve responded to feedback and moved applications: away from exam periods; closer to rehearsals starting and over a long period whilst people have access to equipment and are at the top of their game through the competing season.”
After the initial application forms, eligible applicants will be invited to the next phase: Auditions Workshops in September, where applicants will have the opportunity to work on concert repertoire together and individual conversations with a panel.
As an annual project, applications are required for each year of activity. The NYPBS panel assesses everyone as a whole. Both new and returning members must complete the application form. During the audition workshops, the panel will offer places for each individual in the ensemble they’ll gain the most in the year.
