By Douglas Gardiner, The Eagle Pipers’ Society

The Eagle Pipers’ Society will once again be running The Captain John A MacLellan MBE Memorial Dinner & Recital Competition on Saturday, August 24, 2024. The venue will be The Caledonian Hotel, Edinburgh.  Dress code is Black Tie.  Tickets will be priced £60 and go on sale shortly.

The following pipers have accepted invitations to play:

  • Iain Speirs
  • Callum Beaumont
  • Stuart Liddell
  • Ian K. MacDonald
•Captain John A MacLellan MBE in 1949

The judge will be Major Bruce Hitchings MBE BEM.  Bruce’s military career followed a similar path as Captain John. Both were pipe major of The Queens Own Highlanders and WO1 Pipe Major, the Senior Pipe Major, British Army and Chief Instructor at The Army School of Piping, Edinburgh Castle.

The evening is currently Edinburgh’s only premier solo piping event and honours of one of our founding members.  It also provides a rare platform for the playing of 20th century piobaireachd.   One of the key successes of the dinner is bringing Captain John’s tunes into the popular competitive repertoire. Only a few days after last year’s dinner, The Clasp at Inverness was won by Callum Beaumont playing The Phantom Piper of Corrieyairack.

We are once again indebted to the generous support of The William Grant Foundation.
