How will I know if my reed is too wet?

If the cane reed has taken on too much moisture it won’t vibrate properly. It will sound dull and be lower pitched. When it dries out the pitch will change.

Will spittle hurt my reed?

No. Cane consists mostly of cellulose. The enzymes in saliva will have no effect as we are not capable of digesting cellulose. If you spit on your reed it is more likely attract dirt and bacteria. This will cause long term problems and possibly mould. Use fresh water instead.

What if my reed becomes mouldy?

Soak it in some 1% hydrogen peroxide for a minute or so. This should kill the bacteria and create a protective layer so the mould is less likely to return. If it does return, soak again in hydrogen peroxide – it will not damage the reed.
