By Brian Spalding, Piping Convenor
It was a wonderful day of competition at Inveraray Highland Games on Tuesday, 22 July, with round 100 pipers in attendance.
We also held a ceremony in memory of a late, great predecessor in my role as Piping Convenor, Robert Stewart, as we gathered under his tree on the Game’s field and remembered his great contribution to local piping and these very Highland Games. Over the last 12 months we have unearthed a unique and priceless archive, we are only just beginning to sift through, which tells a fascinating story of Robert’s commitment and passion for solo piping across all realms of the specialism, and especially his encouragement and commitment towards the development of young local talent across mid Argyll.
Appropriate then for Stuart Liddell, PM of Inveraray & District Pipe Band and multiple award winner of the top solo piping awards, to be joined by competitors from our Novice, Juvenile contests in a tune as we poured a dram over the trunk of Robert’s tree, I’m sure he would have enjoyed. He received a wonderful turnout for the ceremony.
