Today, May 24, 2026 the National Piping Centre officially marks its 30th anniversary, celebrating three decades of successfully fulfilling its mission: enriching lives through piping.
Since first opening its doors in May 1996, the Centre has evolved from a visionary project to safeguard traditional music into the world’s premier institution for the development, education, and promotion of Scotland’s national instrument. Over the past 30 years, the Centre has been at the forefront of the expansion and evolution of piping and the wider traditional Scottish music scene.

In a pioneering move for higher education, the Centre partnered with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) to create the first-ever BA (Scottish Music – Piping) degree. It also launched The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland, a dynamic performance and development programme that now welcomes over 100 of the country’s top young pipers and drummers into its ranks each year. Beyond formal education, the Centre established Glasgow’s first-ever international piping festival, Piping Live!, which has grown to become the largest piping festival in the world, drawing performers from every corner of the globe. Closer to home, grassroots music has been fostered through the launch of Community Piping Clubs across Glasgow, offering inclusive tuition and supportive spaces for youth that have recently expanded into Leith and Aberdeen.

Finlay MacDonald, Director of Piping at the National Piping Centre, said: “I fondly remember getting one of the first lessons in the National Piping Centre from Pipe Major Angus MacDonald, before the doors were officially opened. It makes me immensely proud to still be involved and help this amazing community celebrate and enjoy piping of all forms.
“Piping is in a very good place, with more people playing from more diverse backgrounds and we look forward to continuing our commitment to enriching lives through piping. We are planning a whole year of celebrations and events to celebrate this milestone and look forward to what the next 30 years will bring.”

To mark the exact day of the anniversary, May 24, the Centre is inviting the global piping community, alumni, and music lovers to share their memories, photos, and messages of support on social media using the hashtag #PipingCentre30, creating a digital celebration of the people who make the institution what it is.
While the official anniversary falls this weekend, supporters won’t have to wait long to celebrate in person, with the Centre teasing that a series of exciting 30th-themed events will be announced throughout the year.
