This year’s Scottish Pipers’ Association marks its 100th year by introducing a new format for its annual Professional solo piping contest which takes place on Saturday, April 13.

The Open category has been dispensed with and instead the competition will be graded.

SPA President Tom Johnstone, said: “We felt that the old format of ‘Open’ discouraged both the Premier/A grade players and the B/C grade players for obvious reasons, and we trust that the new format will give all players a platform to compete against their peers.”

To ease potential logistical issues, both events will take place at The National Piping Centre’s two premises – the Premier/A Grade at Otago Street and the B and C grade at McPhater Street. The contests will run concurrently.
