Today, we begin another occasional feature on the Bagpipe.News website.

In actuality, there will be two occasional features.

Both are image-led. The first – Piping Yesterday – features photographs from our archives whereas the second one – Piping Today – is devoted to today’s piping scene.

To kick off the Piping Yesterday series, we have a superb photograph of the Govan Police Pipe Band, the forerunner of the Glasgow Police Pipe Band, taken in the late 19th century.

Organisers of the annual Festival of Juvenile Solo Piping say they are disappointed that their proposals to hold an in-person competition this year have had to be cancelled.

As we reported last week, a modified version of the popular Scottish event was planned for October 17 at Auchenharvie Academy in Ayrshire, Scotland. In effectm this meant that only chanter competitions would be held.

Caledonian Piping Club spokesman, Gerard McClumpha said: “We had 15 different mitigation measures in place to enable us a safe environment but the local authority [North Ayrshire Council] have refused us a school let.

“Our 2020 event, therefore, is off. We now look forwards to 2021 and to holding the competition on Saturday, October 16.”
