The Scottish Pipers’ Association’s (SPA) popular annual Juvenile competition will be the latest junior solo piping event to be held online.

Crucially, the event is open for entries from young pipers all around the world, although entrants must be a member of the historic piping organisation.

SPA President, Logan Tannock, said: “This year we have to allow for the current Covid-19 regulations here in Scotland. We have 12 categories and entrants can only enter one age group. Entries are by video submission.

Entries will close on Wednesday, November 25 and video submissions must be uploaded no later than noon on Saturday, November 28. Entries should be uploaded to a ‘cloud’, such as Dropbox or OneDrive and emailed to scottishpiperswebmaster@gmail.com.

In March, as much of the world entered some form of ‘lockdown’, the SPA was forced to cancel its annual Adult Amateur competition and its Professional competition for 2020. Both were due to take place within two weeks of one another. The Juvenile contest will, therefore, be the only SPA competiton to go ahead this year. The organisation was also forced to postpone the final of its latest ‘Knockout’ competition. The final – between John Patrick and Callum Beaumont – will take place at a later date.

Last year, the SPA celebrated its centenary year with a host of events that culminated in a rectial held at the National Piping Centre’s Otago Street campus (the former College of Piping) on January 10.

• We hear the Vale of Atholl Pipe Band’s annual Juvenile competiton, usually held in mid-January, will also go online for 2021. Watch this space.
