Kevin Reilly.

Kevin Reilly was appointed chairman of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting yesterday.

The meeting was held remotely using videoconference software due to ongoing restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. 60 member bands were represented and it took one and a half hours to go through order papers.

Reilly, who lives in the northeast of England and who held the position over decade ago, takes over from John Hughes. We understand that Reilly’s appointment met with unanimity from delegates. Hitherto a member of the RSPBA’s Music Board, Reilly was first appointed chairman of the organisation in 2003 and spent seven years in the role. He takes over at a difficult time for the organisation, with few believing there will be any pipe band competitions taking place this year due to the ongoing pandemic.

An announcement on the Scottish and World Pipe Band Championships, the two remaining ‘majors’ ostensibly going ahead, is expected in the next few weeks.
