The Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust and The Beatrice Foundation are working in partnership to create a role with the remit to recruit and teach piping to school pupils and create a development pipe band within the Inverclyde Council region. The teaching will include working with groups and individuals.

The work will take place in various locations throughout Inverclyde within a seven hour week. The duration of the contract is for 23 months, and the salary will be £29,451 – £39,147 (pro rata).

ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES INCLUDE: Recognised Music degree / diploma in Performance or Teaching relevant to the musical discipline of the advertised post. Sufficient experience/knowledge to teach from beginner to advanced level and have a wide knowledge of repertoire.

SKILLS & ABILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Ability to relate well to pupils, motivating and inspiring pupils of all abilities.
  • Ability to explain, demonstrate and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to advise pupils on care and maintenance of instruments.
  • Knowledge of current curriculum requirements for the full range of SQA courses in Music Performing.
  • Knowledge of repertoire and ability to organise performances, rehearsals etc.
Main Duties and Responsibilities  
  1. To teach piping to school pupils from P5 – S6.
  2. Teach and develop piping pupils to enable the introduction of a local authority development pipe band.
  3. To select suitable pupils, operating the Authority’s selection procedure as required.
  4. To effectively monitor and report on pupils’ progress according to Authority policy.
  5. To assist class music teachers in giving specialist advice, as required.
  6. To keep abreast of general education developments & specific instrumental and music developments.
  7. To contribute as a member of the school staff to the work of the school’s music curriculum.
  8. To monitor the state of repair of Authority instruments and follow the Authority policy for repairs to Instrumental Service instruments.
  9. To carry out administrative duties as required.
  10. To give advice to pupils or parents on such points as purchase of instruments / music etc.as required
  11. To be involved in the development of ensemble, band and orchestral activities at all levels of ability.
  12. Participation as staff in authority groups.
  13. Any other duties and responsibilities as directed by line management.
