John McLellan DCM tune tribute in preparation for exhibition opening on July 31, 2025

The exhibition to honour Pipe Major John McLellan DCM of Dunoon is opening at the end of this month, July 31, and will run till August 30 at Dunoon Burgh Hall. The exhibition marks the 150th anniversary of his birth and will highlight the composer’s distinguished military career, and his remarkable body of work in the music world.

During his life composed more than 170 tunes and songs. His most popular tunes include Lochanside, The Bloody Fields of Flanders, South Hall, Cowal Gathering and The Taking of Beaumont Hamel to name a few. The exhibition opening event will feature a playlet by Julie Forrester and the Dunoon Players, titled John McLellan at the Pearly Gates.

The exhibition organisers were recently contacted by piper Graham Waller about his special tribute to John McLellan DCM on his 150th Anniversary.

Graham was the Pipe Major of the renowned Pride of Murray Pipe Band and is currently the Pipe Sergeant with the Scots Guards Association Pipes ​and Drums. He is also a fan of John McLellan DCM’s music, and in tribute to Jock’s 150th Anniversary this year he has added a 4th part onto the John McLellan DCM’s 3-parted march titled The Bells of Malta.
