The National Piping Centre (NPC) is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the NYPBS Ensembles programme, offering young pipers and drummers aged 10–25 the chance to enhance their performance skills, meet new people, and make unique music together, culminating in a performance on one of the country’s biggest stages.
NYPBS brings together young pipers and drummers from across Scotland (and those with Scottish links), guiding them through a six‑month music-making journey from October to April. Delivered through three skill-tiered ensembles, the programme combines weekend workshops, masterclasses, and two “BIG Sessions” for all ensembles. Participants benefit from professional tutelage, experience playing with accompanists in a cohesive ensemble setting, and the support of industry-leading tutors to create an exciting mix of new repertoire together, including working with Artists in Residence.
Alongside intensive weekend workshops and ensemble rehearsals, participants will benefit from inspiring masterclasses and collaborations, led by some of the most respected figures in the pipe band world and visiting guest artists.
The programme will culminate in a professionally produced end-of-year concert, held in April at a prestigious Scottish venue. Each ensemble will take the stage to showcase the creative journey they’ve undertaken together.

Eligibility and Entry Requirements
NYPBS Ensembles is open to young pipers and drummers aged between 10 and 25 at the time of audition (participants may turn 26 during the programme). Applicants should live in Scotland or have Scottish links; e.g. Scottish family connections, studying in Scotland.
The programme is designed for players across a broad skill range, from those performing with top-tier Grade One pipe bands to those at the entry level of the NYPBS pathway. Applicants should be confident on their instrument. For pipers, this means having fully transitioned onto the pipes, producing a steady tone, and having familiarity with a variety of tune styles including Marches, Strathspeys, Reels, Hornpipes, and Jigs.

Applications and Auditions
To apply, candidates must submit an online application form along with a 10-minute audition video by midnight on 24 August 2025. Following initial review, successful applicants will be invited to attend free in-person Audition Workshops held in September in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness.
Final ensemble placements will be confirmed in time for the programme’s October launch.

Fees and Financial Support
Both the application and audition process are free of charge. For those offered a place in the programme, a means-tested tiered bursary scheme is available.
To ensure the programme is accessible to all, NYPBS encourages applicants to get in touch to discuss any specific access or support needs via nypb@thepipingcentre.co.uk.
Steven Blake, Director of NYPBS, describes the experience as: “Joining NYPBS Ensembles is a unique opportunity for young musicians to explore new repertoire, push their creative boundaries and perform at the highest level.”
