In a somber week for the pipe band community, two Grade 1 bands, Johnstone Pipe Band and Closkelt Pipe Band have announced their dissolution.
Late on Wednesday evening of October 15, 2025, Pipe Major Donald Mackay of Johnstone Pipe Band, revealed its decision through social media to disband its Grade 1 unit due to challenges, including the inability to appoint a suitable Leading Drummer. The band, which has represented Johnstone for over 80 years with championship victories and a vibrant youth program, will continue its legacy through its Grade 3A band.

Similarly, Closkelt Pipe Band, led by Pipe Major David Chesney, announced its immediate dissolution on Sunday, October 12, 2025, after a remarkable journey from Grade 4B World Champions in 2011 to competing among the elite in Grade 1 since 2019. Citing internal and external factors, David expressed gratitude to members, supporters, and sponsors, reflecting on the band’s 16-year legacy as a family united by music.
Both bands expressed heartfelt appreciation to their members and supporters, leaving behind cherished memories and significant contributions to the piping world.
