Magnus Stone wins the Lochnell Intermediate Piping Competition

The Lochnell Intermediate Piping Competition is organised by the Argyllshire Gathering Trust and was held on Saturday, October 11, 2025. The overall champion was Magnus Stone, 17, from the US, winning the piobaireachd and placing fourth in the MSR.

Magnus has featured in various competition prize lists over the last two years since he first caught our eye on the Piping Live! Emerging Talent stage in 2023.

Douglas Baird from Torphichen was the winner of the MSR, receiving a prize presented by McCallum Bagpipes of the William McCallum Snr. Memorial Chanter. The other competitors were Andrew Pattison, Bobby Allen, Calum Dunbar, Chris McCartan, Eala Niamh McIlhinney and Kyle Cameron. The judges were John Wilson, Robert Wallace and Jamie Forrester.

The event is hosted at Lochnell Castle at Benderloch, Argyll with permission of the Earl of Dundonald and hosted by his son Archie, Lord Cochrane. The event is sponsored by Dungallon Country House Hotel, The Piobaireachd Society, McCallum Bagpipes and RSPS.
