Balmoral announces instructors for two summer camps at Kutztown and Edinboro

Balmoral School of Piping & Drumming will hold two, week-long Summer Camps for piping & drumming. The first session, July 5-10 at Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA. The following week, July 12-17 at PennWest-Edinboro University, Edinboro, Pennsylvania. 

At both camps you will receive instruction in small classes, 1-on-1 tutoring sessions, and camp-wide activities suitable for all ages. Also on hand, staff piping instructors Richmond Johnston and Sean Regan, and drumming instructor Ian McLeod. Registration will close June 10, 2026. Derek Midgley (Piping/KU) has won B Marches and Silver Medal at the Northern Meeting, 2nd Highland Society of London Gold Medal at Oban; Dunvegan Medal, 6/8 Marches & 2/4 Marches at Dunvegan, Overall at the United States Piping Foundation Championship.

Andrew Carlisle (Piping/KU), Director of Piping at Carnegie Mellon University, Andrew has won A Grade Strathspey & Reel at Oban, A Grade Piobaireachd & Overall at The Cowal Highland Gathering, US Gold for both Light Music & Piobaireachd, and three All-Ireland titles at Senior level. 

Andrew Walker (Piping/KU) a 5th generation piper, member of Ulster Scottish Pipe Band, and EUSPBA judge. A full-time educator and high school special education teacher in the Lehigh Valley, and piping teacher for many years through both private instruction and at summer schools.

Jon Quigg (Drumming/KU) – In 1989, Jon became Drum Sergeant of the CoW Pipe Band, helping them garner numerous North American contest wins, culminating in the 1999 World Pipe Band Championships win. He has taken part in recording projects and drumming clinics around the globe.

Bruce Gandy (Piping/PennWest), a member of the 78th Fraser Highlanders, the first non-Scottish band to win the World Pipe Band Championships (1987). Bruce’s solo awards include the Canadian Gold Medal, Gold Medal at the Northern Meeting, Gold Medal at Oban, and Bratach Gorm. He is a 3-time winner of the MacCrimmon Memorial Cairn for Piobaireachd.

Scot Walker (Piping/PennWest), #1 ranked bagpiper in the EUSPBA for seven years during his competitive career. Competed with Lomond & Clyde Pipe Band. He taught music for 20 years at Moravian University and is a published composer. Currently on the EUSPBA judges’ panel, he adjudicates for both sanctioned and non-sanctioned piping competitions.

Miles Bennington (Drumming/PennWest) – Principal drumming instructor for the CMU Pipe Band, Bennington’s prizes include North American Champion, Canadian Champion, U.S. Champion, EUSPBA Champion, PPBSO Champion Supreme, and top ten at the World Pipe Band Championships.
