Stuart Liddell won the first heat of the Scottish Pipers’ Association’s Knockout series for the Piping Times Trophy.

Stuart, from Inveraray, narrowly defeated Gordon McCready of Renfrew tonight at The National Piping Centre Otago Street, formerly the College of Piping. Stuart is the current holder of the trophy which was first competed for in 1964 and won by Duncan Johnstone. Stuart goes through the semi finals which take place next year.

Kyle Shead (19) opened proceedings with a 20 minute set before Tom Johnstone, SPA President, introduced the pipers.

Announcing the winner at the end of an evening of first class piping, Tom remarked that in the history of the Knockout there had never been such a close margin between the winner and runner up.

Heat 2 takes place on Saturday, June 8 between Callum Beaumont and Cameron MacDougall.
