Angus D. MacColl won the 2019 Captain John A. MacLellan MBE Memorial Competition held last night at the Waldorf-Astoria Caledonia Hotel in Edinburgh

His winning tune was The Phantom Piper of Corrieyairick.

In the Piping Times of June 2005 Lt Col D.J.S. Murray wrote about the story behind the tune. Read it here.

The evening itself is a formal evening where four invited pipers play one tune each, the tune being one composed by Captain John A. MacLellan. There is one judge and this year it was Tom Speirs.

Also invited to play were last year’s winner Glenn Brown (The Edinburgh Piobaireachd), Pipe Major Ben Duncan (Salute to the Great Pipe) and Bruce Gandy (For My Lass, Fair, Pretty and Highland).

The event receives support from the William Grant Foundation.
