Chris Apps’ reed advice: reed mouth size effects pitch

If the mouth of your reed is too small, it will tend to be higher pitch and most likely out of balance especially on the high G and high A.

Insert a reed mandrel/poker into the bottom of the reed and give it a little push and a twist to open the closed end of the staple. This will bring the pitch down whilst also balancing the scale.

Be mindful that opening the reed mouth may make the reed harder to blow so some scraping or sanding may be necessary. If the mouth is too big, the reed will be harder to play and pitch too low. To close the mouth a wee bit, squeeze the blades together just above the binding and rock the blades from side to side during squeezing. Repeat as necessary. Don’t worry if you close the mouth too much. Just squeeze the sides of the blades just above the binding and the gap will open a little.
