Is it ok to play a gig with a fellow piper if we are playing different style reeds? This can be problematic as reeds sometimes pitch differently, even in the same make of chanter. In this situation, always tune to the lower pitched chanter.
If you need to tape, just put it over the existing tape to bring the higher pitched chanter down to the lower pitch. When the performance is over you can remove the extra tape without disturbing the original pitch.
If you’re playing in a group then you really should try to have matching reeds – and matching chanters for all that. You’ll have a much more balanced sound.
