Chris Apps’ reed advice: what strength of reed should I aspire to play?

New pipers will necessarily play a very easy reed. When stamina improves, should the new piper increase the strength of their reed? What strength is the perfect strength?  Simple answer – there no perfect strength that works for all pipers.

As you become more comfortable with the mechanics of your bagpipe, it may become difficult to maintain a steady pitch because the reed has become too soft for you.  You will eventually find the strength that gives you maximum sound with minimal struggle. Never decide what is right for you based on someone else’s opinion. You are unique and your strength should always be your choice. Having said that, if you play in a band, the reed they provide will usually be stronger than your solo reed.
